Relentless offense secures second consecutive blowout victory for Women's Soccer

8/25/2023 6:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Four different Tommies got in on the scoring to take down the Portland State Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore. – The opening half of the Tommies' (2-1-0) first away game was a quiet one, but the offense that opened up for seven goals in its last win rifled off four goals in the second half to put the Vikings of Portland State (0-3-0) away Friday afternoon, 4-0 at Hillsboro Stadium in Portland, Ore.

Offensively, the Tommies launched 18 shots and put 8 on goal with four getting by Portland State's goalkeeper Eden Millan. Lexi Huber scored the third goal of the game and assisted on Abby Hoiska's first career goal within a little under three minutes between. Camryn Rintoul scored the game's first goal quickly followed up by Abby Brantner's second of the season. Both Sofia Caballero and Sofia Englund assisted on Tommie goals.

RECAP:
St. Thomas looked to continue their offensive roll that began last Saturday with its 7-0 win over Niagara. That roll would have to wait over 45 minutes…it was worth the wait.

The Tommies fired off four shots in the opening 16 minutes, but the Portland State defense bent without breaking and held the visitors scoreless. The game stayed that way throughout the entirety of the first half. The Purple held the advantage in shots (8-7), shots on goal (6-2), and corners (2-1). Both sides were handed a yellow card with Sydney Kubes receiving the first of her St. Thomas career.

It took not more than a minute and thirty seconds after the halftime break for the Tommies to be granted a golden opportunity to break the stalemate. Portland State's Kalo Iongi was given a red card for her foul in the penalty area as the last defender back. Camryn Rintoul was sent in to take the penalty kick and for the second time in her career she delivered from that spot. The Tommies had the lead 1-0.

The offensive onslaught did not cease and two and a half minutes later Abby Brantner took a beautifully placed ball from Sofia Caballero and deposited it into the back of the net, 2-0 Tommies.

Portland State did have plenty of great opportunities, but Olivia Rowe and the defense were impossible to break. Rowe saved a career-high nine shots and earned the first true shutout victory of her young career.

It would be over twenty minutes until the Tommies could get another by the opposing goalkeeper but once Lexi Huber got the third goal through in the 72nd minute Abby Hoiska's first career goal in the 75th minute was not far behind.

Ultimately the Tommies outshot the Vikings 18-12, but Portland State put more on goal (9) than the Toms (8) and had more corner kick opportunities (3-2).

TOP TOMMIES

·       Camryn Rintoul's penalty kick goal was the second of her career and third of the Tommies' 2023 season. St. Thomas' three PK goals top their total from 2022 of one (scored by Camryn Rintoul) and 2021 (0). The Tommies have three penalty kick goals in three games to start 2023.
·       Abby Brantner's two goals are good for second most on the team behind Mariah Nguyen's three. Brantner has scored as many goals this season (2) in three games as she did in 17 games in 2022.
·       Lexi Huber scored her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute, she also added her second assist in the 75th. Her four points place her tied for second on the team with Brantner.
·       Abby Hoiska followed up a game in which she contributed her first career assist with her first career goal the very next time out.
·       Olivia Rowe is now 2-1 in goal for the Tommies following her second consecutive shutout effort. Her nine saves propelled her to the first true shutout victory of her collegiate career.

QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from head coach Sheila McGill after the 4-0 victory:
"Today was a total team effort! High heat with great intensity from everyone wore down the other team. We had a great penalty kick finish by Cam to start it out and a quick second goal from Brantner. It was so fun to have Lexi score her first goal back from last year's injury and a great first collegiate goal from Hoiska. Truly an exceptional team effort in the 90+ degree heat for our first road win of the season!"
