Tommies outshot Panthers but could not get the equalizer through
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Tommies' 2023 campaign began with a strong effort in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at South Field on Thursday, Aug. 17, ultimately coming up short 1-0 to the Panthers of Northern Iowa.
Their offensive attack was relentless from St. Thomas outshooting their opponent 16-7, but the defensive-minded Panthers side came prepared to take down the Tommies for the first time in program history.
RECAP:
From the very onset of the game, the Tommies went on the offensive, quickly firing off four shots in the opening four minutes and thirty seconds. Their best chance came in the latter half of that stretch when Mariah Nguyen had no one to beat but the goalie on a shot saved by the Panthers' Caitlin Richards. The rebound ended up squarely on the boot of Nguyen who was promptly denied a second time by Northern Iowa's goalkeeper.
The rather one-sided start to the first half continued until Morgan Barnette, aided by a through ball from Marissa Gross, chipped one passed the left glove of the Tommies' Olivia Rowe to give the Panthers a one goal lead. The Purple had the shot advantage at the time of the goal, 7-3.
First half action concluded, and Northern Iowa's single tally remained the only score in the opening 45 minutes. The Tommies had more shots (7-5), shots on goal (3-1), and corner kicks (5-0).
With the clock winding down through its final minutes, the Tommies had one last push in them with under ten to play. Their strong offensive barrage won them two corner kicks and two headers in front of the net, both of which sailed high over the crossbar.
Much like the first half, the Tommies outshot the Panthers and had more corner kick opportunities in the second but could not even up the score as the 90th minute expired on their opening bout.
TOP TOMMIES
· Reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year, junior Mariah Nguyen, led the Tommies' offensive effort with three shots on goal and five shots overall.
· Fifth year returner, Jasmine Gates rifled four shots putting one on goal.
· Junior, Abby Brantner put two shots on goal along with being one of the two players called upon to set up the offense and take corner kicks.
QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from head coach Sheila McGill after the 1-0 defeat:
"I think we brought it; I think we played well and played strong. They had one moment where they had the goal, but we had great opportunities and we were creating what we wanted to create. We problem solved quite a bit within the game, as coaches as well as players and I think that we put some new people in places where they made impacts right away, from that side of it I thought it was strong and we cannot wait to move forward from it."
"With the quick turnaround we talked about how we are going to need the depth of our bench even more but at the same time this was a great learning experience for us. We are excited to have the next opportunity. Niagara should be a tough opponent and we are ready to take them on."
UP NEXT
The Tommies look to defend home field on Saturday, August 19th against non-conference opponent Niagara out of New York. That game kicks-off at 11:00 a.m. central standard time.
