Nguyen's hat trick propels Women's Soccer to 7-0 victory

Four different Tommies got in on the scoring to take down the Niagara Purple Eagles

ST. PAUL, Minn. – It was night and day for the St. Thomas Women's Soccer team in terms of offensive output after their 1-0 defeat to Northern Iowa, the Tommies put their foot on the gas and never relented scoring seven goals to take down the Purple Eagles of Niagara, Saturday afternoon at South field.

Offensively, the Tommies launched 22 shots and put 15 on goal with seven getting by Niagara's goalkeeper Felicia Grufman. Mariah Nguyen contributed three goals of her own with Lissa Mizutani, Abby Brantner, Emma Fournier, and CJ Fredkove each scoring one to add to the ultimate tally.

RECAP:
The Tommies offensive outburst began almost as soon as the opening kickoff. Before the second minute was even finished the Toms had two corner kicks and two shots on goal. Ultimately, the early-game pressure was too much, and Niagara's defense committed a penalty on Mariah Nguyen. In just the fifth minute of the game Nguyen set the tone with a penalty kick goal.

Quickly following Nguyen's first goal of the game, Olivia Rowe was tested with two of Niagara's best chances, she made both saves and ultimately finished with five saves and the first win of her collegiate career.

In the 24th minutes the Purple's offense began their attack on the far sideline with three straight pinpoint passes to find Lissa Mizutani on the near side who promptly deposited the ball in the back of the net from over 20 yards away. Jasmine Gates was credited with an assist on the play.

Much like the play that led to Mizutani's goal the Tommies began streaking up one side of the field and then three passes later Abby Brantner had a perfect opportunity to score, and she did, in the 33rd minute. Lexi Huber assisted on the play after being brought into the game just eight minutes earlier.

St. Thomas headed into the halftime break with a three-goal lead. It took Mariah Nguyen just 54 seconds to draw her second penalty kick of the game and much like the first time, she did not miss, sending the second goal of her game into the back of the net.

The fleet-footed Nguyen was not satisfied with just two goals. She turned over the back line of Niagara's defense deep in the box and slapped in the third goal of her day from a steep angle. It was the first hat trick of her collegiate career.

St. Thomas would add two more goals for good measure, Emma Fournier in the 63rd minute and CJ Fredkove in the 86th. Freshman Abby Hoiska assisted on Fournier's goal and Jasmine Gates tallied her second assist of the afternoon on the team's final mark.

TOP TOMMIES

·       Reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year, junior Mariah Nguyen, led the Tommies offensive effort with three goals. Nguyen's previous career high was two goals against UW-Green Bay last season. Her hat trick was the first for the Tommies since Mallory DeBoom scored three goals in a 5-0 win over Augsburg in 2018.
·       Fifth year returner, Jasmine Gates finished with two points on the day assisting on two goals for the Tommies.
·       Abby Brantner, Lissa Mizutani, CJ Fredkove, and Emma Fournier each scored their first goals of the season in the winning effort.
·       Abby Hoiska and Lexi Huber each added an assist. It was Hoiska's first collegiate point.
