Retz, Kemp combine for one-hitter as part of series-opening split

4/29/2023 6:45:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The pitching performances of Walker Retz and Nolan Kemp highlighted St. Thomas Baseball's series-opening split with Omaha Saturday at Koch Diamond, taking a 13-4 loss in game one and a 4-1 win in game two. Retz and Kemp combined to throw a one-hitter to help the Tommies improve to 6-25 overall and 4-10 in the Summit League.

Game One – L, 13-4
Both teams scored a run during the second inning, led off by an RBI single from the Mavericks in the top half. Joe Roder led off the home half with a double, was moved over on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a sacrifice fly from Dylan O'Connell to tie the game, 1-1.

Following a leadoff single and two fielder's choices by the Tommies in the third inning, Charlie Bartholomew singled to right center field to drive in Ben Vujovich. Roder followed with a double during the next at-bat and Max Moris bunted for an RBI single and a 3-1 lead.

The Mavericks took their final lead with a four-run fourth inning before adding one in the fifth, three in the eight and four in the ninth. Roder drove in the final Tommie run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a one-out ground out.

Kolby Gartner (1-6) started the game and took the loss after throwing 3.2 innings with five earned runs allowed on five hits with one strikeout. Duke Coborn threw 4.1 innings in relief with a season-high six strikeouts.

The Tommies finished with 10 hits and left nine runners on base while the Mavericks totaled 13 hits and left nine runners on. Roder recorded his third three-hit game of the season and second over the last three games overall. He scored one run and drove in one RBI while Bartholomew went 2-of-5 from the plate with one run and one RBI.

Game Two – W, 4-1
The Tommies' one-hitter began with Walker Retz's (1-4) seventh start of the season, which lasted 5.0 innings and featured just two baserunners through the end of the fifth. The only hit allowed came in the top of the fifth inning before Retz left in the top of the sixth, putting three runners on base by hit by pitches.

Nolan Kemp entered to pitch in the sixth frame and limited the damage to one run after forcing a pop up, allowing a sacrifice fly and ending the inning with another pop up in foul territory. He closed out the final 4.0 innings, allowing just one baserunner after the sixth, to earn his first career save with five strikeouts, including a strikeout to end the game.

The combined one-hitter was the first for the program in 20 seasons, last accomplished by Sean Lindstrom during a 1-0 win over St. Mary's on April 22, 2003.

The Tommie offense got going during the top of the fifth inning as Matthew Enck singled with one out. Enck's hit to left field was the start of three straight singles, including an RBI to center field by Brigs Richartz to go ahead 1-0. Max Moris followed Richartz with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.

O'Connell led off the seventh inning with his second triple over the last three games and came home during the next at-bat on an RBI single by Enck. Following a sac bunt and a groundout, Enck was brought home on an RBI hit by Moris.

O'Connell finished with three of St. Thomas' eight hits while Enck went 2-of-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

St. Thomas and Omaha close out the weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
