Vos delivers in 12-2, walk-off win to take series from Omaha

4/30/2023 4:41:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Sophomore Joe Vos delivered the final blow of an impressive day Sunday as St. Thomas Baseball beat Omaha 12-2 in walk-off fashion, securing the series victory at Koch Diamond.

Vos went 4-of-5 from the plate with four RBI and two doubles, highlighted by an RBI single to score the final run in the eighth inning. He was one of four Tommies with multiple RBI and one of three with multiple hits. Dylan O'Connell went 3-of-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Ben Vujovich was 2-of-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Sophomore Evan Esch (2-2), who had 16 strikeouts and one run allowed over his last two outings, went 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts on Sunday to earn the win. He kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, allowing four baserunners through the fifth.

The Tommies struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the order reached on five straight at-bats. Vos brought in the game's first runs with a two-RBI double followed by another two-RBI double by Matthew Enck during the next at-bat.

Following an Omaha run in the sixth inning, the Tommies put up another four-run inning during the seventh. Max Moris and Joe Roder led off with back-to-back walks, forcing a pitcher change. A sacrifice bunt from Bartholomew set up RBI singles by O'Connell and Vos, followed by a sacrifice fly from Enck to push the lead to seven, 8-1.

Esch entered to pitch the eighth inning but was relieved by Tucker Huhn after the first two batters reached base. Huhn drew a double play before Omaha added its final run on an RBI single.

Brigs Richartz reached by an Omaha throwing error to lead off the home half before stealing second and advancing to third base on a balk. Moris drove in Richartz on a ground out before singles by Roder, O'Connell and Vujovich, the final of which drove in two runs before Vos's walk-off RBI single.

The weekend series win is the second straight for St. Thomas over Omaha after sweeping the Mavericks to end the 2022 season.

St. Thomas returns to Koch Diamond May 5-7 for a three-game series against Summit League leading Oral Roberts.
