Softball takes two of final three games at the Evansville Invite

2/26/2023 9:18:00 PM | Softball

Evansville, Ind. – St. Thomas Softball (6-9) took two of their final three games from their five-game tournament against Bowling Green (5-9), Evansville (13-1), and Purdue Fort Wayne (4-12).

Their two-game slate on Saturday was a split, a 5-2 early-morning win over Purdue Fort Wayne and a late heartbreaking loss to Bowling Green 7-6, in eight innings.

For the third time in three weekend tournaments the Tommies came home with a win in their final game, downing Purdue Fort Wayne 5-1 in a defensive clinic led by Isabelle True's seven-inning performance.

Overall, the Tommies have now won as many non-conference games (six) as they did all last season.

Game Three Recap
The Tommies scored four runs in three innings to take the lead from the Mastodons of Purdue Fort Wayne and utilized Katie Goelz' first home run of the season to cap off a 5-2 victory.

Ella Cook went all seven innings for her second complete game of the season in the circle for the Purple. Cook struck out a team season-high eight batters and allowed just two earned runs on six hits and three walks. She earned her first career win.

The offense came away with eight hits in the game to go along with three walks and four stolen bases. Brooke Ellestad, Katie Goelz, and Coryn Jacobson each hit safely twice. Goelz' solo home run in the fifth was the Toms' lone extra base hit of the contest. Ellestad led the way with two runs batted in, Kaitlyn Raymond, Goelz, and Jacobson also contributed an RBI.

Game Four Recap
St. Thomas jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases. Katie Goelz brought Avery Wukawitz home on a two-strike single and Coryn Jacobson walked home Kaitlyn Raymond

The Tommies led by as much as four runs when Goelz added two RBI and Jacobson tacked on one more in the third inning to bring the score to 5-1. Bowling Green would answer back for two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Brooke Ellestad's RBI triple would be the last scoring play for St. Thomas in the top of the fourth. Avery Wukawitz came home for her second run scored of the game and represented the Toms' sixth and final run.

The Falcons would score four unanswered runs including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The top five Tommies in the order compiled six of the seven hits in the game. Kaitlyn Raymond was the only bat with two base hits in the game and Ellestad's triple was the Toms' only extra-base hit. Katie Goelz led the way in the clutch department bringing home three RBI.

Goelz also had a busy night with the glove at first base. She recorded 12 putouts over the seven-plus inning game. She is just the fourth player in Tommies' Division I history to do so.

Game Five Recap
The Tommies finished their weekend schedule with a well-balanced 5-1 win over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons and completed the two-game sweep of the Horizon League squad.

Isabelle True was the headliner going all seven innings without allowing an earned run. The senior arm was able to work around five hits without striking out a hitter. True did not issue a walk to the 25 batters she faced. She is now a perfect 5-0 to start the season.

Katie Goelz delivered the knockout blow with the bat when she sent a two-run home run over the fence in the fifth inning to score Brooke Ellestad. The blast was Goelz' second of the season, both against Purdue Fort Wayne.

Goelz and Sydney Mickett each stole two bases in the game and the Tommies snagged six bags in total. Their efforts brought the team's season total to 30 stolen bases, just eight shy of their season total last season.
