Softball battles in two close losses at U.S. Bank Stadium

3/10/2023 5:36:00 PM | Softball

Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Thomas softball opened the Gopher Indoor Classic in downtown Minneapolis at U.S. Bank Stadium with two losses to Central Michigan and Idaho State early Friday morning.

Game One Recap
The Tommies tallied just one hit in seven innings against Central Michigan's Grace Lehto. Lehto went all seven innings in the shutout effort striking out nine Toms, walking three, and marching to a 4-0 victory.

In the field, St. Thomas allowed just one run in the first four innings. CMU broke open for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on one walk and four singles.

The Tom's lone hit belonged to Kaitlyn Raymond and came in the third inning with one out and one on. Sydney Mickett had led off the inning with a walk, but the Tommies came up empty on their best scoring chance of the game. Their only other chance with a runner in scoring position came an inning earlier when Grace Bennett and Coryn Jacobson each reached on back-to-back one-out walks.

St. Thomas did not commit an error in the field and did not steal a bag on the base paths.

Game Two Recap
After being shutout in game one, the Tommies' bats turned it on quickly in response against the Idaho State Bengals.

Freshman standout Avery Wukawitz singled up the middle to leadoff the first. She advanced to second easily on a wild pitch and then to third on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Kaitlyn Raymond. Katie Goelz (the Tommies leading RBI hitter) stepped up to the plate with two outs and smoked a ball into the outfield to bring Wukawitz home.

St. Thomas doubled their lead in the top of the second inning. The Tommies game two starter behind the plate, Maddie Grad, hit a one-out triple down the right field line and later scored on another successful sacrifice bunt, this time by Sydney Mickett

Avery Wukawitz then matched her teammate's effort by taking a ball deep down the left field line and, using her legs, stretched what to most would be a double into a two-out triple. Kaitlyn Raymond walked but was then thrown out between first and second while trying to take an extra base to end the inning.

The offense was quiet in every inning after but the fourth when Maddie Grad launched her second base hit of the game in the fourth inning, this time a single to right field. Sydney Mickett then put together a seven-pitch two-out walk, but neither Grad nor Mickett would score in the inning.

The Bengals scratched and clawed their way back into the game to tie it with one run in the fourth inning after scoring one in the third, previously.

With their backs against the wall and extra innings looming Idaho State did not mess around in the bottom of the seventh. After their first hitter lined out to start the frame, they were gifted a hit-by-pitch to put the winning run on. That winning run was brought around to third on a single and emphatically sent home on a walk-off three-run home run.

The Tommies did not make an error defensively but did not steal any bags on the base paths.
