Ellestad homers twice, Softball falls to Drake in five innings

3/11/2023 2:56:00 PM | Softball

Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball jumped out to an early lead in their third game of the Gopher Indoor Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium but ended up falling in five innings to the Drake Bulldogs by a score of 14-5.

The Tommies' first batter of the game, Kaitlyn Raymond, got on with a single up the middle to leadoff the offensive effort. Brooke Ellestad quickly brought her home on an incredibly well-struck home run ball. The Toms would tack on one more in the inning on a Coryn Jacobson sacrifice bunt to score Katie Goelz.

Drake would answer back for two runs in the top of the second and three in top of the third.

St. Thomas got one run in the bottom of the third when Brooke Ellestad unloaded on another ball and sent if over the outfield fence. Ellestad became just the second Tommie to hit two home runs in one game. Cassidy Carby was the first, last season, in a 11-9 loss in extra innings to Canisius.

The Bulldogs answered again with three runs in the top of the fourth. St. Thomas' last run came shortly after, in the bottom of the inning. Brooke Betson notched her first hit, double, and RBI with Maddie Grad on first and no outs to bring the Bulldog's lead down to three.

Drake unloaded in the top of the fifth for six runs and the Tommies went down quietly in the bottom half. The game ended after five innings via the eight-run rule.

St. Thomas' Katie Goelz stole her team-leading seventh base of the season.
