Women’s Hockey Hosts Bemidji State for Final Series of 2023

The Tommies face the Beavers for the first time this season in a conference match up

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team is set to face Bemidji State for the final home series of 2023. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday Dec. 8th and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9th at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Last Time Out
The Tommies faced Minnesota State in a home-and-home series last weekend. On Friday, the Tommies fell by a score of 7-1 in Mankato, Minn. Lauren Stenslie scored the lone goal of the night in the third period for the Tommies.
 
On Saturday, the Minnesota State defeated the Tommies at Saint Thomas Ice Arena, 3-1. Ellah Hause scored her second power play goal of the season in the first period. Calla Frank finished the night making season-high 47 saves and posting a .940 SV%.
 
History against the Beavers
The Tommies and Beavers have played eight times having a 4-4 record against each other. The Purple have a 3-1 home record against Bemidji State. The Tommies won three out of four games against the Beavers last season.
 
In October of 2021, the Tommies earned their first DI win in program history with a 2-1 victory over the Beavers.
 
Scouting Bemidji State
The Bemidji State Women's Hockey team (1-14-1, 1-11-0 WCHA) is led by Head Coach Jim Scanlan in his 10th season.
 
Freshman, Haley Nelson (7 goals – 7 points), and Senior, Taylor Nelson (3 goals, 4 assists – 7 points), lead the Beavers offense in the first half of the season.
 
Goaltender, Abbie Thompson has played in 12 games for the Beavers. Thompson has made 375 saves and posted a .882 SV% so far this season.
 
Record Breakers
The Tommies have set a DI era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 13 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshmen Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger, who have found the back of the net six times. 
 
In 19 games played, Bartz (6 goals, 8 assists – 14 points) and Boerger (6 goals, 9 assists – 15 points) have passed the single season high in points scored.  The previous record was 13 total points set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season) and Abby Promersberger (2021-22 season).
 
Boerger has also surpassed the single season record in assists (previously 8), and Bartz has tied record for power play goals scored in a single season (3).  
 
On the Dot
Through Dec. 3rd, Ella Boerger leads the WCHA and ranks fifth in the nation in face-off wins, winning 226 draws. Brieja Parent currently ranks fifth in the WCHA in face-off winning percentage, posting a .571 face-off percentage.
 
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have scored 41 goals throughout the first 19 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Purple totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
 
The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce, Lindenwood, Cornell and Harvard. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 225-115 and outscored opponents 25-16.   
 
This season, the Tommies have scored 10 power play goals. Last season the Tommies scored eight on the power play, and recorded 11 with the player advantage during the in 2021-22 season.
 
Freshmen Making an Impact
Five of six of the Tommies' top point-scorers in the first half of the season are Tommie Hockey newcomers. Ella Boerger (6G, 9A – 15P), Rylee Bartz (6G, 8A - 14P), Maddie Brown (5G, 2A – 7P), Ellah Hause (4G, 3A – 7P) and Cara Sajevic (4G, 3A – 7P) lead the Tommies in scoring in the first half of the season. Junior, Nicole Vallario has recorded career-high eight points (3G, 5A) so far this season.
 
In early October, after tallying 14 shots on goal and recording five points, Boerger earned the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week. On Nov. 13th Boerger earned her second conference honor, named WCHA Rookie of the Week again. That same week, Bartz was named WCHA Forward of the week after recording her first three-point game.
  
Schedule Talk    
The Tommies will be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to home St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies with also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
