Women’s Hockey travels to Duluth for first road series of the season

After a 10-game homestand, the Tommies travel North to face the Bulldogs
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team is on the road for the first time this season. The Tommies travel north to face conference opponent, University of Minnesota Duluth in a weekend series. The Purple is set to face-off against the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3rd and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4th at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, MN.

Last Weekend Recap
Last weekend, the Tommies hosted No. 1 Wisconsin. After trailing by two early on Friday evening, the Tommies battled back to tie the game twice, but ultimately fell to the top-ranked Badgers, 5-3.
Nicole Vallario recorded the Tommies first goal while playing 4-on-4 hockey, then with under 30 seconds remaining in the first frame the Tommies had an offensive zone face-off win, leading to a goal by Ellah Hause knotting the game at 2-2 going into the first intermission. Midway through the second period, the Badgers scored on their first power play opportunity of the period, taking the lead 3-2. However, it took Abby Promersberger just 30 seconds to skate through center ice, launch a shot on goal, and tie the game once again.
The Badgers scored two more goals, and the Tommies ultimately fell to the Badgers, 5-3.
In game two of the weekend series, the Badgers found a goal per period to lift them to a 3-0 victory over the Tommies.
First period action began with a penalty assessed to the Tommies, sending the Badgers on their first power play of the game resulting in the lone goal of the first period. The second period remained scoreless until the final minute of play, when Britta Curl extended the Badger's lead with 19 seconds remaining in the period. The Badgers scored their third and final goal of the game at the midpoint of the final frame. Frank finished the game with her season-high of 39 saves.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The No. 8-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth Women's Hockey program (6-2-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) is led by Maura Crowell, who is in her 9th season of coaching the Bulldogs. Coach Crowell has guided Duluth to two NCAA Frozen Four appearances, including one NCAA title game.
The Bulldogs are coming off a weekend sweep against Bemidji State. Minnesota Duluth defeated the Beavers by scores of 2-1 and 6-0.
Graduate student, Mannon McMahon leads the Bulldogs with 11 points (5G, 6A) in eight games played this season. McMahon is the top offensive-producing returner from the 2022-23 season, after she totaled 29 points in 39 games played.
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have score 29 goals throughout the first 10 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Tommies totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce and Lindenwood. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 171-54 and outscored opponents 23-9.
The Tommies have set a D-I era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 12 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger who has found the back of the net five times.
Fresh Faces
Three first-years lead the Tommie offense in the first 10 games of the season. Rylee Bartz (3G, 7A, 10P), Ella Boerger (5G, 5A, 10P) and Cara Sajevic (4G, 2A, 6P) lead the Tommies in scoring in the early part of the season. Boerger and Sajevic have each recorded two multi-goal games, while Bartz has recorded three multi-point games.
In early October, after tallying 14 shots on goal and recording five points, Boerger earned the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week.
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team in blocked shots, blocking 22 shots in 10 games played. Hause has also recorded two goals and one assist, tallying her first goal in first game played on Sep. 29th against Franklin Pierce.
Schedule Talk
The Tommies schedule is jam packed with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. In total, St. Thomas will play 35 games throughout the year, including 10 home games in the first five weekends of the season.
The Tommies with be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to home St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies with also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
