Women’s Hockey continues nonconference play against the Lions

Tommies look to remain undefeated to begin the 2023-24 season
St. Paul, Minn. – Women's hockey hosts non-conference opponent, Lindenwood, in a weekend series. The Tommies face-off against Lindenwood at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7 at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

First Weekend Sweep
The St. Thomas women's hockey team opened the 2023-24 season with a sweep against Franklin Pierce. The Tommies defeated the Ravens 7-2 in game one, and 5-2 in game two of the series. The Tommies' seven goals broke the record for most goals in a game in the D-I era. The seven goals included four in the second period. The last time the Tommies had four goals in one period was February of 2020.
The Tommies outshot the Ravens 96-30 on the weekend. 16 different Tommies were on the scoresheet in the first weekend, led by freshman Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger. Both first years tallied four points in two games played - Boerger scoring three goals and recording one assist, and Bartz scoring one goal and adding three assists.
A Weekend of "Firsts"
On Friday, freshman Keara Parker opened things up by scoring the first goal of the season for the Tommies, with assists from fellow freshman Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger in the first period.
After ending the first period 1-0, the Purple offense exploded in the second period. The second goal of the game came on the power play as Ella Boerger capitalized on an assist from Keara Parker. Parker and Boerger quickly captured their first collegiate multipoint game on that goal.
Shortly after, freshman Ellah Hause found the back of the net for the Tommies, scoring her first career goal and advancing the score to 3-0, with assists coming from Cara Sajevic and Isabel Lippai.
In the final minute of play on Friday, freshman Ella Boerger buried her second goal of the game, helping the Tommie offense to set a D-I program record of goals scored in a single game. Boerger also tied the single game record of goals in a single game (two), and points in a single game (three).
Graduate student goaltender, Calla Frank, earned her first win as a Tommie on Friday night.
On Saturday, it was another night of firsts for the Tommie newcomers. Freshman Maddie Brown opened scoring early in the first period, scoring her first collegiate goal, with an assist coming from Rachel Golnitz. Golnitz's assist was her first point in Purple.
In the opening minutes of the second period, freshman Rylee Bartz scored her first collegiate goal and tallied her third career point, assisted by fellow freshmen Ella Boerger and Laine DeVries.
Graduate Student, Olivia King, played in goal for the Tommies and made her first collegiate start in net. Olivia made 10 saves for the Tommies, playing the full 60 minutes to earn her first collegiate win.
Seven out of the 12 goals on the weekend were scored by Tommie first years.
Scouting the Lindenwood Lions
Lindenwood is led by first year Head Coach Taylor Wasylk. Coach Wasylk comes to Lindenwood after spending five seasons as head coach at Suffolk University.
Lindenwood has begun the 2023-24 season 2-2, with two series against WCHA opponents. In weekend one, on Sep. 23 and Sep. 24, the Lions swept Bemidji State at home 4-1, 4-2.
The Lions are coming off an 0-2 weekend against No. 1 Wisconsin. Wisconsin defeated the Lions 6-0 and 16-1 in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
Junior forward, Morgan Neitzke leads the Lindenwood squad with five points on the season (two goals, three assists) in four games played. Neitzke led the Lions in points during the 2022-23 season with 17 goals and 12 assists in 28 games.
The Tommies and Lions have a 2-2 record in the past two seasons against each other. Last season, the Tommies swept Lindenwood in Missouri by scores of 4-1 and 5-3.
Schedule Talk
The Tommies schedule is jammed pack with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western College Hockey Association (WCHA) play. In total, St. Thomas will play 35 games throughout the year, including 10 home games in the first five weekends of the season.
The Tommies open the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) schedule with a home series against perennial power Minnesota October 13-14. The Friday night game of that series will be played at Xcel Energy Center at 4:00 p.m. in a double header with the men's team playing after at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's contest will be played at St. Thomas Ice Arena at 4:00pm.
The Tommies will be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to host St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies will also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
