Women’s Hockey hosts No. 1 Wisconsin to close out 10-game homestand

The Tommies face the Badgers in a home WCHA series
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team hosts conference opponent, University of Wisconsin in a weekend series. The Purple is set to face-off against the Badgers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27th and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28th at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Last Weekend Recap
Last weekend, the Tommies hosted No. 2 Ohio State. The Buckeyes were off to a fast start in game one of the weekend series. Ohio State opened the weekend scoring 1:10 into the first period after taking control in the offensive zone.
The Tommies quickly fired back, as Cara Sajevic scored her first of two goals on the night, 6:08 into the first period. The assist was credited to Rylee Bartz, who had the assist on Sajevic's other goal of the evening, scored just 13 seconds into the third period.
Goaltender Maggie Malecha played 46 minutes for the Tommies, making 38 saves and posting a .950 SV% on the night. The Purple fell by a score of 6-2 in game one of the series.
In game two, Allie Monrean scored the lone goal for the Tommies, her first of the season, assisted by Nicole Vallario. Olivia King totaled 38 saves, recording a 3.75 goals against average, and a .856 save percentage for the Tommies. The Purple ultimately fell in game two of the series by a score of 7-1.
Scouting the Badgers
The No. 1-ranked University of Wisconsin Women's Hockey program (8-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA) is led by Mark Johnson, who is in his 20th season of coaching the Badgers. Throughout his time in Madison, he has complied seven NCAA titles, nine WCHA playoff titles, and nine WCHA regular season championships. The Badgers won their seventh national title in the 2023 NCAA tournament.
With his record of 602-113-53, Coach Mark Johnson is the winningest coach in NCAA women's college hockey history. Johnson is the first NCAA Division I women's hockey coach to reach 600 wins.
The Badgers are coming off a weekend sweep against Bemidji State. Wisconsin defeated the Beavers by scores of 4-0 and 8-1.
Wisconsin's Cassie Hall, Lacey Eden, and Caroline Harvey earned monthly WCHA honors, as released on October 3rd. Eden was named the WCHA Forward of the Month, while Hall was chosen as WCHA Rookie of the Month, and Harvey won WCHA Defender of the Month.
Undefeated in Non-Conference Play
The Tommies are 4-0 in non-conference play to start the 2023-24 season. The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce and Lindenwood. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 171-54 and outscored opponents 23-9.
The Tommies have set a D-I era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 12 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger who has found the back of the net five times.
Fresh Faces
Three first-years lead the Tommie offense in the first eight games of the season. Rylee Bartz (3G, 6A, 9P), Ella Boerger (5G, 4A, 9P) and Cara Sajevic (4G, 2A, 6P) lead the Tommies in scoring in the early part of the season. Boerger and Sajevic have each recorded two multi-goal games, while Bartz has recorded three multi-point games.
In early October, after tallying 14 shots on goal and recording five points, Boerger earned the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week.
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team in blocked shots, blocking 19 shots in eight games played. Hause has also recorded one goal and one assist, tallying her first goal in first game played on Sep. 29th against Franklin Pierce.

The Tommies schedule is jam packed with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. In total, St. Thomas will play 35 games throughout the year, including 10 home games in the first five weekends of the season.
The Tommies with be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to home St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies with also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
