Women’s Hockey opens conference play at the Xcel Energy Center

The Tommies play Friday at the Xcel Energy Center, and return home to host the Gophers on Saturday afternoon

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Women's hockey hosts conference opponent, Minnesota, in a weekend series. The Tommies face-off against Minnesota at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13th at the Xcel Energy Center, and Saturday, Oct. 14th at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Undefeated start to the season
The Tommies are off to a 4-0 start to the season. The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce and Lindenwood. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot their opponents 171-54 and outscored opponents 23-9.
 
The Tommies' have set a D-I era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 11 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger who has found the back of the net five times.
 
Last Weekend Recap
On Friday night, the Tommies got off to a fast start against Lindenwood, scoring three goals in the first period, as Maddie Brown netted the first goal of the night just five minutes into the game. Scoring continued as Rylee Bartz and Nicole Vallario added to the Tommies' lead, sending Tommies into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.
 
Momentum shifted in the second period, as Lindenwood scored two goals of their own.
 
Third period play started with both teams battling to win the game. The Lions continued with their offensive push from period two, scoring midway through the final frame and tying it up at three apiece. A great save by goalie Calla Frank would keep it tied until the final minute, when Bartz scored her second goal of the night with 15 seconds left to play.

On Saturday, Cara Sajevic opened scoring for the Tommies midway through the first period, marking her first collegiate goal. The Tommie offense wasn't done there, as they continued to make an offensive push and score three more goals in the first period. First-years, Ella Boerger, Keara Parker, and Cara Sajevic each scored goals on the power play. Junior, Maddy Clough assisted on all three of the power play goals for the Tommies.
 
The second period began with some fast-paced play and the Tommies scoring three more goals from Alli Pahl, Abby Promersberger and Ella Boerger. Lindenwood offense found a way to capitalize on opportunitie late in the game, scoring with two minutes left in the second period.
 
The Tommies went on to win the game 7-2 and earn their second sweep of the season. Goaltender, Olivia King earned her second win of the season and second of her career, making 11 saves.
 
Rookie of the Week
First-year Ella Boerger was given a WCHA honor for her strong performance this weekend at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena, named Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league's office on Monday.
 
The Andover, Minn. native tallied 14 shots on goal, scored two goals and recorded three assists, totaling a five-point weekend to earn the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week.
 
Boerger leads the Tommie offense with nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) in four games played this season. She has recorded three multi-point games and two multi-goal games to start her collegiate career.
 
Scouting the Gophers
Lindenwood is led by Head Coach Brad Frost in his 17th season. In 16 seasons, Coach Brad Frost has led the Gophers to four NCAA national championships, 10 NCAA Frozen Four appearances, and five WCHA Final Faceoff titles.
 
The Gophers are currently ranked fourth in the national polls. The Maroon and Gold ended last season falling in the national semifinals to WCHA rival Wisconsin.
 
Minnesota returns 17 players from the 2022-23 roster, including 2022 Olympian Abbey Murphy. Murphy recorded 50 points (29g, 21a) in 39 games played last season, and has totaled five points (3g, 2a) in the first two games of the 2023-24 season. The Gophers welcomed nine newcomers, including six freshman and three transfers to this season's roster. 
 
The Gophers are coming off a weekend sweep of RIT. The Gophers defeated the Tigers by scores of 3-0 and 5-1 in Rochester, N.Y.
