Olivia Rowe's nine saves leads Women's Soccer and NDSU to scoreless tie
10/1/2023 4:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Four of Rowe's nine saves came within the final 15 minutes of action to secure the tie for the Tommies.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's Soccer ended their matchup with the Bison of North Dakota State in a scoreless tie on a hot and sunny 90-degree day in Minnesota's capital.
The game started off rather slowly in the first half for both teams, followed by a eventful second half for each side.
Overall, the Tommies launched five shots and put two on goal, defensively they held the Bison scoreless on the back of nine saves from Olivia Rowe.
RECAP
The Tommies did not put a shot on goal in the first 45. Rowe saved three shots in the first half but did not allow any of the pressure through, forcing a scoreless game into the halftime break.
Three yellow cards were handed out in the first half, one to the Tommies and two to the Bison. The Purple's leading scorer, Mariah Nguyen, was handed a yellow card in the 12th minute and did not re-enter for the remainder of the contest.
The second half started off with continued pressure from both teams which lasted throughout the physical and draining frame. The Tommies fired off two shots on goal to NDSU's six on net, but both goalkeepers stood strong the entire game.
Two more yellow cards were dished out to the home team in the second. The Bison were forced to play with 10 players for the final 30 minutes after one of their 11 was given a red card.
The Tommies' best chance of the day came in the first half when Lissa Mizutani stepped up to the outer edge of the box and curved a ball just a few feet outside the back post in the 19th minute. Another fantastic opportunity came in the second half when Jasmine Gates had a shot that hit the crossbar. While in the back Ellie Tempero and Kendall Quall both had strong games to help the game stay scoreless by making a multitude of stout defensive stands.
TOP TOMMIES
· Junior keeper, Olivia Rowe tied her season-high for saves with nine and got her forth clean sheet of the season.
· Freshman, Kendall Quall played all 90 minutes for the seventh game in a row. She leads the Tommies' field players in minutes played this year (819).
QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from head coach Sheila McGill after hard-fought tie with the Bison:
"I feel a bit disappointed to be honest. We could have and should have done better than we did. Offsides really hurt us today and that was frustrating, it felt like we stopped more of our attacks than they did. Secondly, the heat hit us, and it hit us hard, especially in the second half. That mixed with the amount of fouls called really destroyed any sort of rhythm in the game. We did get out first Summit League point, I will not walk away happy with today's effort but at least we can say we came out with that one point."
