Women's Hockey heads back to the Saint Thomas Ice Arena to defend four game home win streak

Last Weekend Recap
Last weekend, the St. Thomas faced No. 3/4 Minnesota. The Tommies fell in both contests by scores of 0-5 and 1-4. 
 
The Tommies held #3/4 Minnesota to just two goals in the final 40 minutes Friday night at Ridder Arena but could not catch up after falling behind three in the first period, ultimately falling to the Gophers 5-0. 
 
Alexa Dobchuk finished the game with 41 saves in net for the Tommies. 
 
On Saturday, St. Thomas Women's Hockey remained equal with the #3/4 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers through the first 20 minutes, but the Gopher's relentless offense was too much for the Tommies.
 
The Gophers scored just 34 seconds into the game when they got one passed Saskia Maurer. The Tommies' netminder made 18 consecutive saves to close out the first period and finished the opening frame with 19. 
 
Maurer's hard work in goal was rewarded when Maddy Clough snapped a shot from the point off a Minnesota defender's skate and into the back of the net early in the first, her fifth goal of the season. Maija Almich, who was leading the Tommies in goals scored (7) without an assist, was credited with her first of the season. 
  
Saskia Maurer continued her impeccable stretch in goal making 38 saves to keep her team in it all day.  
  
About the University of Minnesota-Duluth (17-6-1 overall, 11-6-1 WCHA)
The Tommies (7-16-1) head back home to face the No. 6 ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (17-6-1) for a weekend WCHA series. 
 
This WCHA match-up is the second time the teams have met this season. 
 
Last weekend the Bulldogs hosted Bemidji State. The Bulldogs defeated the Beavers by scores of 8-1 and 5-0. 
 
Graduate student Gabbie Hughes leads the Bulldogs with seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points in 22 gp. Gabbie Hughes was a Patty Kazmaier finalist last season.
 
Goaltender Emma Soderberg has played in 19 games for the Bulldogs and has posted a .929 SV % and has a 1.69 GAA. For a third consecutive year, Emma Soderberg has been named to the 2023 Women's Hockey Commissioners Association "Watch List" for the National Women's Goalie of the Year.
 
Series History
The Tommies and the Bulldogs have met 6 times in St. Thomas' short Division I program history, four times in last year's regular season and twice this season. 
 
The Tommies have an 0-5-1 record against the Bulldogs. 
 
The Purple have been outscored 29-4 in their six games against Duluth. At home they have been outscored 10-0 in two games. 
 
Last time the teams met the Tommies upset No. 8 ranked UMD in a shootout and earned their first two WCHA points of the season. 
 
Brieja Parent, Allie Monrean, and Haley Maxwell have each scored against the Bulldogs in their careers. Former Minnesota-Duluth skater, Parent, is the only Tommie with multiple goals against her former team (2). 
 
Tommie goaltenders have come to play against Minnesota Duluth. Senior Alexa Dobchuk has made four appearances and has stopped 122 shots allowing 18 goals for a .871 save percentage. Sophomore Saskia Maurer has made three appearances between the pipes making 108 saves and allowing seven goals against for a .939 save percentage. 
 
For context, the current top save percentage mark in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association belongs to UMD's Emma Soderberg (.930).
 
Tommie Stats
Two Tommies are in the WCHA's top ten shot percentage category:
 - Molly Grundhoffer with one goal on one shot (100%) at the top of the list
 - Lauren Stenslie has five goals on 24 shots (24%) comes in at ninth 
 
Maija Almich is currently second in the conference with four game winning goals. Her last game-winner was on 12/17 against Bemidji State to secure the programs first WCHA series sweep. 
 
Gabby Billing's 211 face-off wins puts her at sixth most in the conference. 
 
Maddy Clough and Haley Maxwell, the Tommies top defensive line, rank among the top shot blockers in the conference, 40 and 36 respectively land them in 6th and 8th most. 
 
Both of the Tommies most prominent goaltenders have been worked more than any tandem in the WCHA. 
 - Alexa Dobchuk is averaging a conference-leading 30.4 saves per game 
 - Saskia Maurer is directly behind her teammate with 29.4 saves per game
