Tommies keep it close with No. 6 Duluth through two periods, ultimately falling 3-0

1/21/2023 10:38:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Mendota Heights, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's Hockey kept No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth within one goal for the opening 40 minutes but could not contain the Bulldogs in the final period, falling 3-0 in a regular season Western Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena Saturday night.

The last time St. Thomas met with Minnesota Duluth was at Amsoil Arena on December 10th. The Tommies battled the Bulldogs to a 1-1 tie and took the extra WCHA point in the shootout, upsetting the then No. 7/8 ranked Duluth team. Saskia Maurer was the brightest star in that performance making 48 saves in 65 minutes.

She picked up right where she left off holding the Bulldogs, who had scored 13 goals in their two prior games, to just three goals in 60 minutes. The Switzerland native made 27 saves for a .900 save percentage to keep her team within striking distance the entire way.

The offense ran into some trouble scoring against the WCHA's number one defense who are giving up just 1.34 goals per game. The Tommies mustered 12 shots on goal and could not get one by Duluth goalie, Emma Soderberg, who secured her conference-leading seventh shutout.

Quoting Coach Johnson
"It is tough, when you fight, and you don't win. I am so proud of our team. When I watch the way they competed, challenged every puck, every shot. I am excited for our future, that's all I can say."
