Clough scores early, Tommies cannot stop Minnesota falling 4-1
1/14/2023 6:16:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's Hockey remained equal with the #3/4 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers through the first 20 minutes, but the Gopher's relentless offense was too much for the Tommies who fell by a score of 4-1 at Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Gophers scored just 34 seconds into the game when they got one passed Saskia Maurer. The Tommies' netminder made 18 consecutive saves to close out the first period and finished the opening frame with 19.
Maurer's hard work in goal was rewarded when Maddy Clough snapped a shot from the point off a Minnesota defender's skate and into the back of the net early in the first, her fifth goal of the season. Maija Almich, who was leading the Tommies in goals scored (7) without an assist, was credited with her first of the season.
The second period was dominated by the Gophers who outshot the Tommies 10-1 and outdrew them 14-5. Last year's Patty Kazmaier winner, Taylor Heise scored on the power play at 3:11 and Ella Huber added the other Gopher goal eight minutes and thirty-eight seconds later.
Minnesota's three penalties in the third period made things a bit closer on the stat-sheet but the Tommies could not crawl back on the scoreboard. The Gophers got one more goal to put St. Thomas away with 4:19 left in regulation.
The Tommies struggles on the power play continued going 0-4 on the day.
Saskia Maurer continued her impeccable stretch in goal making 38 saves to keep her team in it all day.
