Last Weekend Recap
Last weekend, the Tommies earned their third sweep of the season and extended their winning streak to four games.
St. Thomas defeated the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers 5-1 at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena on Friday night.
With 10:10 remaining in the first period, sophomore Lauren Stenslie danced her way through the slot and tossed in a beautifully placed wrist shot by the RIT goaltender, Sarah Coe, to give the Purple a 1-0 lead. Kate Haug assisted on the play, her fourth point in two games.
The second period began much like how the first period ended, with the Tommies on the power play. The Tigers were charged with four penalties in the period and St. Thomas did not capitalize on any of their power play chances.
The Tigers were given two power play opportunities in the middle period and managed one goal by St. Thomas netminder Alexa Dobchuk. That goal came just 53 seconds after Gabby Billing turned a forecheck steal into the Tommies' first shorthanded goal of the season.
Special teams play continued when just 2:26 into the third period RIT was sent to the penalty box. On their sixth and final power play chance, Allie Monrean scored her second goal of the season and gave the Tommies a chance to breathe with a 3-1 lead. Haley Maxwell added her fourth assist of the season on the play.
Five minutes later Anna Solheim sauced a pass to Gabby Billing who scored her second goal of the game. Eighty-three seconds after that, Maddy Clough tallied her fourth goal on the year giving St. Thomas a 5-1 lead.
The Tommies were delighted to receive three strong periods from Alexa Dobchuk who stopped 17 of 18 shots faced for her second win of the season.
St. Thomas Women's Hockey completed their non-conference schedule on Saturday night with a 5-1 record after shutting out the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers 3-0 at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Three separate Tommie skaters scored, one in each period. Allie Monrean got things started after darting off the bench toward RIT's end. Monrean found the puck on her stick and skated towards the slot to unload a wrist shot that beat the opposition's goaltender.
Just under six minutes into the second period, Luci Bianchi turned an RIT turnover on the blue line in the offensive zone into offense on the other end. Bianchi had nobody to beat but the goaltender as she put the puck within the left post and into the back of the net to give the Tommies a 2-0 lead.
St. Thomas' third goal came late in the third period on the power play. Maddy Clough carried the puck into the far corner looking for a teammate in front of the net. She found Lauren Stenslie who, for the third straight game, put one by the goaltender to seal the deal on the Tommies' fourth straight victory.
Saskia Maurer played all 60 minutes in net for the Purple and made 24 saves for the second shutout of her collegiate career.
