40 days later, Women's Soccer finishes what it started
9/27/2022 7:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Green Bay, Wis. - Tommie Women's Soccer turned an "M" (for maybe) into a solid "W" (for win) here Tuesday night. A non-conference game that began in St. Paul on Aug. 18 resumed here Tuesday, and the Toms took care of business with a 3-0 victory over UW-Green Bay,
It has been nearly six weeks since Coach Sheila McGill's Toms took a 2-0 lead in its season-opening game against UW-Green Bay at South Field. But lightning delays after halftime halted that game in the 54th minute.
Forty days later, the teams met on the Phoenix' home field to resume the game. The Purple were able to finish the final 37 minutes, close out a shutout, and add one more score for good measure.
McGill's current team (5-2-3) has now surpassed St. Thomas' 2021 win total of four, still with seven games left in the 2022 season. Playing in its first season in Division I and the Summit League in 2021, the Toms took an early 2-0 loss at UW-Green Bay, so this was one more sign of progress for the program.
Sophomore Mariah Nguyen scored an insurance goal here Tuesday -- her second goal of the game.
Did You Know?
Nguyen's two goals in the same game officially came approximately 962 hours apart, in two different states, on fields 260 miles apart on the map. Over the last five days, Nguyen has contributed two goals and two assists to help the Toms go 2-0-1.
This is the second two-goal game recorded by a Tommie thus far in the D-I era -- Abby Brantner scored two last season at Idaho in a 3-2 overtime loss.
Jasmine Gates scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute back on Aug. 18, and has waited 40 days to get credit in the official stats for that goal.
Next Up
St. Thomas plays two Summit League road games next Friday night and Sunday afternoon, at North Dakota State (6 p.m.) and at North Dakota (1 p.m.).
