Galvin tallies 16 kills as Tommie Volleyball falls to CMU, 3-1

St. Louis – St. Thomas Volleyball came away with a first-set win Friday before falling to Central Michigan University, 3-1, to begin the Billiken Tournament in St. Louis. The Tommies pulled out a 28-26 win in set one before the Chippewas rallied with three straight set wins.
The Tommies (1-3) and Chippewas (3-1) stayed within three points of the other through the first set, ending with three straight St. Thomas points on a CMU service error, assisted blocks from sophomore Lauren Galvin and Emma Goerger, and a kill from Galvin for a 28-26 win.
St. Thomas and Central Michigan traded leads five times and faced 13 ties during the second set, won by CMU 25-21. The Tommies trailed 22-20 late in set three before the Chippewas rattled off three straight points.
Galvin led the way for the Tommies with a season-high 16 kills and a .293 hitting percentage while adding nine digs, two blocks and two aces. Freshman Allie Kopp totaled 16 assists, six digs and two aces while senior Carrie Rutlege led the way with 11 digs.
As a team, St. Thomas finished with a .150 hitting percentage compared to .250 for Central Michigan. The Tommies totaled 10 blocks, led by junior Ellie Dammann.
St. Thomas will play a doubleheader Saturday to close out the tournament, first at 10 a.m. against the host Saint Louis University and ending at 1 p.m. against Youngstown State University.
