Tommie Volleyball travels to St. Louis Sept. 2-3 for Billiken Invitational

St. Paul, Minn. – Coming off its first win of the season, St. Thomas volleyball returns to the court for its second of four season-opening tournaments on the road Sept. 2-3 in St. Louis at the Billiken Invitational.
 
The Tommies begin the weekend Friday at 3 p.m. with a lone match against Central Michigan University before a doubleheader Saturday at 10 a.m. against host institution Saint Louis University and at 1 p.m. against Youngstown State University. This will be the first meeting ever for St. Thomas against all three programs.
 
All of St. Thomas' matches will include live stats: vs. Central Michigan HERE, vs. Saint Louis HERE and vs. Youngstown State HERE. The Tommies' match against the host Saint Louis will be streamed live on ESPN+. Tickets are available HERE.
 
Tommie Watch
Three underclassmen (Allie Kopp, Libby Mattila, Lauren Galvin) started all three matches while two freshmen middle blockers (Emma Goerger, Megan Wetter) started two matches over the first weekend tournament Aug. 26-27 at the Bobcat Classic hosted by Montana State University.
 
Goerger was named to the Bobcat Classic All-Tournament Team after she led St. Thomas with 3.35 points per set with a .177 attack percentage. She finished with 22 kills, 13 blocks and 4 service aces.
 
Over the weekend, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Galvin led the Tommies with 2.45 kills per set with a .146 attack percentage. Graduate student defensive specialist Carrie Rutledge paced St. Thomas with five service aces and 45 digs.
 
St. Thomas grabbed its first win of the season Saturday, Aug. 27 with a 3-2 decision over Montana State in Bozeman, Mont. Four of the five sets were decided by three points or fewer, including the final fifth set. The Bobcats were on the cusp of scoring the match point twice before the Tommies scored four of the final five points for the win.
 
Goerger led St. Thomas with 18 kills and a .293 attack percentage to go along with three service aces and eight total blocks. Galvin and junior middle blocker Ellie Dammann added double-digit kills each, including a .231 attack percentage from Dammann.
 
The Tommies are leading the Summit League with 1.73 service aces per set and are fifth with 2.00 blocks per set and 13.82 digs per set. Goerger is fifth in the league with 1.30 blocks per set and 10th with 3.35 points per set. Rutledge leads the Summit League with 4.09 digs per set.
 
Scouting Central Michigan
Central Michigan began its season 2-1 at the Memphis Tiger Brawl Aug. 26-27 hosted by the University of Memphis. The Chippewas took their season opener, 3-0, over Eastern Washington University and followed with another win, 3-2, over Memphis. Central Michigan's first loss of the season came in five sets to Nicholls State University.
 
The Chippewas are hitting .209 with 14.0 kills and 13.0 assists per set. CMU ranks 46th in the nation with 16.15 digs per set. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Aly Gurtiza ranks 29th in the nation with 5.15 digs per set.
 
Scouting Saint Louis
Saint Louis is on a three-match winning streak to open the 2022 schedule, pulling out two three-set and one five-set matches at the Arkansas State Invitational in State University, Ark. SLU opened the season Aug. 26 with a 3-0 win over the University of Arkansas Little Rock and a 3-2 win over Arkansas State University. The Billikens closed out the tournament with a 3-0 route of Mississippi Valley State University.
 
The Billikens are hitting .180 with 10.7 kills and 9.9 assists per set. SLU is second in the country with 3.36 aces per set and are 30th with an opposing hitting percentage of .122. Sophomore outside hitter Mak Hill leads the team with 3.11 kills per set while junior defensive specialist Carlie Rodgers leads with 4.56 digs per set.
 
Scouting Youngstown State
Youngstown State opened the season by hosting the YSU Volleyball Invitational, going 2-1 on its home court. YSU started with a 3-0 win over the University of Idaho and a 3-2 decision over Delaware State University on Aug. 26. The Penguins first loss of the season came, 3-1, to Valparaiso University.
 
The Penguins are hitting .212 with 11.5 kills and 11.0 assists per set. YSU's attackers are led by sophomore outside hitter Paula Gursching with 4.27 kills per set and a .238 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Isidora Sisic leads the team with 3.42 digs per set.
