St. Louis – St. Thomas Volleyball handed Saint Louis University its first loss of the season Saturday as part of a split to close the Billiken Tournament in St. Louis. The Tommies pulled out a five-set win over SLU, 3-2, to begin the day and fell to Youngstown State University, 3-0.

St. Thomas (2-4) notched its second win of the season against the Billiken Tournament host Saint Louis University (4-1). Sophomore Libby Mattila notched her second career double-double and first of the season after tying a career-high 13 digs while adding 12 kills, one shy of tying a career-high. Sophomore Lauren Galvin led the Tommies with 15 kills and a .289 hitting percentage. Freshman Keya Luta Win Hunt led the team with a career-high 16 assists.

The Billikens controlled the first set, leading by as many as 10 points before a 25-17 decision. The Tommies faced another deficit in the second set, 19-14, before scoring 11 of the next 13 points to close the set. Mattila and freshman Emma Goerger combined for four kills and five total blocks to lead St. Thomas to a 25-21 win.

The third set went to extra points after St. Thomas faced a 24-21 deficit. Facing match point, Mattila recorded a kill to set up five straight points and a 26-24 win to pull ahead, 2-1. The fourth set saw just one tie before SLU took a 12-2 lead and a 25-13 win to force a fifth set.

Following a quick point by the Billikens, Goerger served and combined with Galvin to score six straight points for a 6-1 advantage. The Tommies held on late and earned the win on a kill from Galvin and assist from freshman Allie Kopp.

In the final match of the tournament, St. Thomas struggled to hit in a sweep to Youngstown State (3-3). Sophomore Isabella Halcomb set a career-high 16 digs, setting the career mark early in the second set. Galvin led the Tommies with six kills as she added five digs and one block.

St. Thomas took an early first set lead before Youngstown State pulled away with eight of the final nine points and a 25-16 win. The Penguins began the second set on a 6-2 run and again pulled away late for a 2-0 advantage. The third set featured 10 ties and five lead changes while YSU again pulled away late with five of the final seven points and a 3-0 sweep.
