Volleyball to play three matches Sept. 9-10 at Rambler Challenge

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Volleyball travels to Chicago Sept. 9-10 to take part in the Rambler Challenge for its third tournament to begin the 2022 season.
 
The Tommies open the Rambler Challenge with a doubleheader Friday, first facing the host school Loyola Chicago at 12:30 p.m. followed by Rutgers at 5 p.m. St. Thomas faces Kansas State Saturday at 12 p.m. to close out the weekend. This will be the third straight weekend facing opponents for the first time in program history.
 
All of St. Thomas' matches will include live stats: vs. Loyola Chicago HERE, vs. Rutgers HERE and vs. Kansas State HERE. The Tommies' match against Loyola Chicago will be streamed live on ESPN+. Tickets are available HERE.
 
Tommie Watch
St. Thomas came away with its second win in as many weekends Sept. 2-3 during the Billiken Invitational hosted by Saint Louis. The Tommies secured a five-set win over the host Saint Louis (17-25, 25-21, 26-24, 13-25, 15-11), handing the Billikens their first loss of the season.
 
The Tommies overcame deficits in both the second and third sets, first scoring 11 of the final 13 points of the game before holding off the Billikens' match point for a 26-24 third-set win. St. Thomas scored six straight points to take a 6-1 advantage and secured the win on a kill from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Galvin.
 
Galvin led St. Thomas with 15 kills against the BIllikens, followed by sophomore outside hitter Libby Mattila with 12 and freshman middle blocker Emma Goerger with seven. Goerger added team highs with six blocks and five aces. Freshman setter Keya Luta Win Hunt paced the team with 16 assists.
 
Mattila notched her first double-double of the season, and second of her career, after setting a career-high 14 digs against SLU.
 
Galvin was selected to the Billiken Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the Tommies with 37 kills and a .246 hitting percentage. She averaged 4.00 kills per set with two service aces to open the tournament against Central Michigan. Galvin later added a team-high 15 kills and a .289 hitting percentage in the win over SLU.
 
The Tommies are leading the Summit League with 1.91 service aces per set and are sixth with 2.13 blocks per set. Goerger ranks fourth in the league with 0.50 services aces per set and sixth with 1.18 blocks per set. Freshman setter Allie Kopp is eighth in the Summit League with 0.43 service aces per set, graduate student defensive specialist Carrie Rutledge is eight with 3.28 digs per set, and Galvin ranks 11th with 2.78 kills per set.
 
Scouting Loyola Chicago
Loyola Chicago holds a 3-4 overall record and has split its last four matches. The Ramblers fell in four sets at Marquette (19-25, 14-25, 29-27, 19-25) on Tuesday, Sept. 6. In their most recent tournament action, the Ramblers went 2-1 at the Michigan Invitational, grabbing wins of 3-1 over Morehead State and 3-0 over Toledo.
 
The Ramblers are hitting .226 with 12.86 kills and 11.64 assists per set. Loyola Chicago ranks 48th in the nation with 2.50 blocks per set. Senior Taylor Venuto ranks 27th in the country with 31 total blocks.
 
Scouting Rutgers
Rutgers enters Friday 4-2 overall after dropping two matches at the Towson Tournament Sept. 2-3 in Towson, Md. The Scarlet Knights' lone win of the tournament came in a sweep against Morgan State.
 
The Scarlet Knights are hitting .202 with 12.00 kills and 11.16 assists per set. Rutgers ranks 44th in the nation holding opponents to a .151 hitting percentage and 55th with 15.60 digs per set. Freshman Alissa Kinkela ranks 49th in the country with 243 total attacks and 56th with 87 total kills.
 
Scouting Kansas State
Kansas State holds a 5-1 overall record heading into the weekend after a 2-1 stretch Sept. 1-3 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Wildcats started the season 5-0, including wins of 3-1 over Syracuse and 3-0 over North Florida to begin the UCF Challenge. Central Florida handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season in five sets (25-20, 18-25, 30-28, 21-25, 11-15).
 
KSU will also face Missouri Sept. 7 in Manhattan, Kan., before traveling to Chicago for the Rambler Challenge.
 
The Wildcats are hitting .256 with 13.23 kills and 12.00 assists per set. KSU ranks 15th in the nation with 2.32 service aces per set and 52nd holding opponents to a .156 hitting percentage. Junior Aliyah Carter ranks 29th in the country with 11.30 attacks per set and senior Elena Baka ranks 25th with 14 total service aces.
