Wildcats hand Tommies sweep to conclude Rambler Challenge

Chicago – Sophomore Lauren Galvin paced St. Thomas Volleyball with 12 kills Saturday against Kansas State to conclude the Rambler Challenge. The Wildcats took a three-set sweep over the Tommies (12-25, 15-25, 16-25) at Gentile Arena in Chicago.
The Purple (2-7) faced a 4-0 deficit to the Wildcats (8-2) to begin the match while Galvin paced the Tommies with four kills in each set. Both teams traded the first nine points of the second set until KSU went on a 3-0 run to keep the lead for the remainder of the game.
A Wildcat attack error allowed the Tommies to take the first lead of the third set, which was followed by four straight points by KSU. Kills from junior Ellie Dammann and sophomore Libby Mattila, along with an attack error by Kansas State, allowed St. Thomas to tie the set, 4-4. KSU scored seven of the next eight points to take control of the match.
Sophomore Eva Fitzgerald led the Tommies with 10 assists while sophomore Ella Wheatcraft paced the squad with eight digs. Dammann was the lone Tommie selected to the Rambler Challenge All-Tournament Team.
The Tommies close out its non-conference schedule Sept. 16-17 at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill. St. Thomas opens the tournament with a doubleheader Friday, first at 10 a.m. against Western Michigan and 1 p.m. against IUPUI. St. Thomas' final non-conference opponent will be the host of the tournament, Bradley, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
