Young Tommies set career marks in close opener at Bradley Classic

Peoria, Ill. – Sophomore Ella Wheatcraft and freshman Allie Kopp each set career-highs Friday as Tommie Volleyball opened the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill. The career marks came as St. Thomas fell to Western Michigan, 3-0, and IUPUI, 3-1.
St. Thomas (2-9) scored four of the first six points against Western Michigan (6-4), including back-to-back service aces from sophomore Lauren Galvin. The Tommies held their last lead at 5-4 before the Broncos scored four straight points to take control of the match. The Purple rallied late to trail one, 23-22, as Western Michigan finished the match with set wins of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-17.
Sophomore Libby Mattila led the Tommies with seven kills with a .190 hitting percentage and five digs. Galvin and freshman Tezra Rudzitis followed with six kills each, while Rudzitis tallied a .545 hitting percentage. Kopp paced the team with 13 assists followed by sophomore Eva Fitzgerald with nine. Wheatcraft led St. Thomas with 10 digs.
After IUPUI (5-5) made a comeback to win the opening set, St. Thomas completed one of its own with a second set-ending 12-5 run. Freshman Emma Goerger recorded four kills assisted by Kopp, who recorded five assists, during the run that was won in extra points on a service ace from Fitzgerald, 26-24.
Set three began with three lead changes followed by four straight Tommie points for a 7-4 advantage. The Jaguars came back with five of the next six points to regain the lead and pulled away to take the set, 25-19. St. Thomas trailed by as many as four points early in the fourth set but came back to tie, 9-9. IUPUI never led by more than three points as St. Thomas stayed around and tied the set twice late ahead of the loss.
Kopp recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 29 assists and 14 digs. Wheatcraft led the team with a career-high 18 digs while Galvin led with 14 kills.
St. Thomas finishes the Bradley Classic Saturday at 10 a.m. against the host Bradley. The Tommies' match in Peoria will mark the final non-conference match of the season.
