Peoria, Ill. – St. Thomas Volleyball forced Bradley to a five-set match Saturday but fell short during the finale of the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill. Sophomore Lauren Galvin set a season-high in kills to lead the Tommies as the Braves won 24-26, 25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12.
Set one remained a close contest throughout as neither St. Thomas (2-10) nor Bradley (4-7) pulled away by more than three points. There were four lead changes until the Braves took a three-point lead, 17-14. A kill from junior Claire Ricard started a 12-7 run by the Tommies to take an extra-point win, 26-24.
Following wins by Bradley in the second and third sets, St. Thomas rallied from an 11-5 deficit to score nine of the next 11 points to grab its first lead of the game. Freshman Ava Wild tallied two kills during the run that helped the Tommies pull out a 25-21 win.
Bradley held a two-point lead in the final set, 10-8, before an assisted block from junior Ellie Dammann and freshman Tezra Rudzitis gave St. Thomas its first lead since the opening point. The Braves rattled off the final five points to steal the win.
Galvin led the Tommies with a season-high 19 kills while she added 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. She also chipped in a season-high three blocks as freshman Emma Goerger led the team with six blocks. Freshman Allie Kopp led the squad in assists behind her second straight double-double of 29 assists and 12 digs. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the Tommies with 25 digs.
The Tommies begin their home slate of matches when they return to the court Sept. 22 and 24. St. Thomas opens the first week of Summit League play Thursday at 7 p.m. against North Dakota State and Saturday at 12 p.m. against North Dakota.
