Tommie Volleyball opens Summit League, home play Sept. 22 and 24

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Volleyball makes its 2022 debut at Schoenecker Arena with a series Sept. 22 against North Dakota State and Sept. 24 against North Dakota.
The Tommies open their home and Summit League schedules Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Bison before Saturday's 12 p.m. first serve against North Dakota.

The Tommies dropped three matches Sept. 16-17 at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., during their final non-conference tournament before Summit League play. St. Thomas fell in straight sets to Western Michigan, lost in four to IUPUI and dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Bradley.
Three of St. Thomas' sets against IUPUI were within three points while four of the five against Bradley came down to four or fewer points.
Sophomore Lauren Galvin was selected to the Bradley Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Tommies with 39 kills, 3.25 kills per set and 46.0 points. She added 23 digs, five total blocks, four service aces and two assists. Galvin recorded her second double-double of the season versus Bradley with 19 kills and 10 digs.
Freshman Allie Kopp tallied career marks in back-to-back matches, setting and tying a career-high 29 assists against IUPUI and Bradley. She also recorded her first career double-doubles with 14 digs against IUPUI and 12 against Bradley. Kopp paced the team with 71 assists, 5.92 assists per set, 32 digs and five service aces.
The Tommies are second in the Summit League with 1.74 opponent blocks per set, third with 1.55 service aces per set and eighth with 1.82 blocks per set. Kopp is sixth with 0.35 service aces per set and sophomore Emma Goerger is eighth with 1.00 block per set.
St. Thomas is 1-0 in home openers during the NCAA Division I era, taking a 3-2 win (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 15-7) over North Dakota Sept. 30, 2021. Sophomore Lauren Galvin tallied 20 kills and 14 digs in the win, marking her first career 20-kill match and fourth career double-double. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge recorded a team-high 23 digs, five assists and one service ace in the win while sophomore Libby Mattila added 12 digs and nine kills.

North Dakota State enters Thursday with a 7-5 overall record after going 1-2 at the Stacheville Challenge Sept. 16-17 in Clarksville, Tenn. The Bison took a 3-0 sweep over UT Martin and fell in four sets to Austin Peay and three sets to East Tennessee State.
The Bison are hitting .241 with 13.6 kills and 12.5 assists per set, and rank 40th in the country with 15.78 digs per set. Senior Michelle Glover is 15th in the nation with a .415 hitting percentage and senior Kelley Johnson is 56th with 10.00 assists per set.
Scouting North Dakota
North Dakota begins the opening weekend of league play 3-8 overall after going 1-2 at the Green Bay Invite Sept. 16-17 in Green Bay, Wis. The Fighting Hawks began the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Green Bay and a 3-2 loss to SIUE before nabbing a five-set win over Drake.
The Fighting Hawks are hitting .154 with 11.53 kills and 10.65 assists per set, and lead the Summit League with 10.88 opponent assists per set. Senior Kortney Carney ranks fifth in the league with 3.18 digs per set and sophomore Ashlyn Olson leads the team with 2.46 kills per set.
