Bozeman, Mont. – The St. Thomas Volleyball Team closed out its first tournament of the season with a thrilling five-set win over host institution, Montana State, for its first win of the season.
"I'm so happy for the program," said Head Coach Thanh Pham. "I couldn't believe how well our freshman stepped up and our upper classmen kept things together. It's a big moment for us and we're not going to let it pass us by. Thank you Tommie Nation for the support."
In the first set, the Tommies found themselves down 21-17, but went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 22. The set also knotted up at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, and 26-26, before St. Thomas scored two-straight points to earn the 28-26 win over MSU.
The Bobcats claimed set two, 25-22 to bring tie the match at 1-1. The Tommies never trailed by more than three points in the set.
St. Thomas pushed its lead to 2-1 after claiming the third set 25-23, despite trailing 23-20 before ending the set on a 5-0 run. The Bobcats responded by claiming the fourth set, 25-19 forcing a fifth set.
The Tommies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the final set before the Bobcats battled back to tie the set at 11-11. The two teams battled back-and-forth through the final points of the match with seven ties in the final six points of the set.
Freshman Emma Goerger led the Tommies offensively with 18 kills and eight blocks and hit .293. Sophomore Lauren Galvin added 12 kills, while junior Ellie Dammann contributed 10 kills in the win. Freshman setter Eva Fitzgerald dished out 25 assists and recorded 13 digs. Defensively, grad student Carrie Rutledge posted 25 digs.
