St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (8-26, 3-5 Summit League) was swept by South Dakota (20-16, 5-3 Summit League) on Saturday in the Tommies' hope opener.
St. Thomas totaled two runs in game one, featuring a Megan Baniecke home run, the first home homer of the Division I era for the Toms. Baniecke enjoyed a two-hit day for the team, finishing as the only Tommie hitter to amass multiple hits. Kaitlyn Raymond, Brooke Ellestad, and Katie Goelz also had knocks for the team, while Goelz reached base on a walk in addition to her hit.
Christina Crawford was hit around for five runs in the loss while striking out two batters. Kendall Hopkins tossed three innings in relief, giving up five runs, and striking out two Coyotes.
With one out, Raymond and Ellestad put together back-to-back base hits, placing runners on second and third for St. Thomas. Sarah Hudson would ground out to the pitcher, allowing Raymond to score, and giving the team its first run. The other run would come in the bottom of the seventh on Baniecke's long ball.
The Tommies were held to just three base hits in a 9-0 shutout loss in game two. Nicole Pieper was 2-2 at the plate and Hudson collected the team's other base hit.
Baniecke was tagged with the loss, allowing all nine earned runs, and failed to record a strikeout. Isabelle True pitched a pristine 0.2 innings of relief. The Toms did not commit an error in game two.
