Softball walks off South Dakota in Sunday thriller

4/10/2022 4:21:00 PM | Softball

St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (9-26, 4-5 Summit League) earned a win in a back-and-forth battle against South Dakota (20-17, 5-4 Summit League) on Sunday, 8-7.

Both teams traded scoreless innings in the first and second, as the pitchers dominated to begin the windy contest, before the Toms hit back-to-back home runs off the bats of Cassidy Carby and Megan Baniecke. It was the seventh home run for Carby and the fourth home run for Baniecke. Carby now leads the team in long balls after passing teammate Brooke Ellestad (6).

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Katie Goelz led off with a double to right center followed by walks from Carby and Baniecke to load the bases. With one out, Sydney Mickett singled through the right side to score two runs and put the Purple up 4-3.

Once again, the Tommies would trail, this time following a four-run top of the seventh by the Coyotes. Trailing 7-4, Kaitlyn Raymond singled to shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nicole Pieper doubled to left field and drove in Raymond, cutting the deficit to two runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mickett singled into left center bringing home Carby and Goelz and walking off the win.

At the plate, Mickett was 4-4 with three RBI to lead the Tommies. Raymond and Baniecke both finished with two hits, and Baniecke added an RBI on her home run in the fourth inning. Six different St. Thomas players score a run including two runs from Goelz and Carby. In addition, Carby walked twice. Pitcher Christina Crawford struck out two batters in seven innings.

The Toms have won at least one game in all three of their Summit League series this season. Each of the three series have had at least one game decided by one run, including two games at Kansas City.
