Baniecke twirls seven innings for Softball in win over Omaha

St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (10-27, 5-6 Summit League) split a doubleheader against Omaha (18-12, 7-4 Summit League) on Friday. The Tommies have now picked up a conference win in each Summit League series thus far in the season.
The St. Thomas offense struggled in game one of the cold Friday doubleheader, amassing just two hits, one of which came on a Katie Goelz solo home run.
Down, 2-0, in the bottom of the fourth, Goelz lined a home run over the left field fence to cut the Omaha lead in half. The home run would be the lone scoring for the Tommies over the first game. Sydney Mickett finished with the other Tommie base hit in the game, but the team did total six walks, including two from Cassidy Carby.
Isabelle True received the start in game one and fired seven innings of three earned run (five runs allowed) ball, including one strikeout. Through the first six innings, True allowed just two runs.
Game two saw a pitching duel won by the Purple, as senior Megan Baniecke shined with three strikeouts peppered over seven innings and allowed just one run. Baniecke earned her third pitching win of the season, and she set a season high in innings (7.0) and walks allowed (0), while her one run allowed was the lowest in a start in 2022.
The Tommies scored first in the third, as Mickett and Adrianna Young both singled to begin the bottom of the frame, and Nicole Pieper followed with a one-out walk. With the bases loaded, Sarah Hudson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Mickett to score.
After the Mavs tied up the game at 1-1, Baniecke helped her own cause with a long ball to left field. This would be all the scoring the team would need, as they picked up a 2-1 victory, helped by a double play turned in the top of the seventh inning.
