Green Bay, Wis. - St. Thomas softball (8-24, 3-3 Summit League) picked up a split of a road doubleheader at Green Bay (14-15, 6-3 Horizon League) on Tuesday. The Tommies won game two, 13-3, after falling in game one, 7-6.
It did not take long for the Tommies to score, as Sarah Hudson followed a Kaitlyn Raymond leadoff bunt single with a double over the right fielder's head to plate the team's first run. With two outs, Cassidy Carby launched her sixth home run over the right center fence, scoring two more runs for St. Thomas.
The Phoenix would add two runs in both the first and second inning on a pair of two-run home runs, taking a 4-3 lead. After letting up runs in the first two innings, freshman righty Christina Crawford responded with a scoreless third, picking up one strikeout. Through four innings, Crawford had amassed six punchouts.
After Maddie Grad reached first on a HBP with one out in the top of the fifth, she stole second, setting up the Tommies with a RISP and just one down. Brooke Ellestad and Hudson would both walk, loading the bases for St. Thomas with two outs. The runners would be left stranded after a pop out to shortstop.
Following a fourth-straight scoreless inning from Crawford, the Tommie offense was brought up in the top of the seventh down by one run. Raymond, representing the tying run, singled up the middle with one out to put a runner on base. Ellestad walked after a Raymond steal to set up a runner on first and second situation with one out. Hudson would power a go-ahead three-run homer to center to put the Tommies on top, 6-4. The Phoenix would walk it off in the bottom of the frame, winning 7-6.
Game two featured another three-run top of the first for the Tommies. Carby tallied a two-RBI double to left, and Mackenzie Rudy followed with an RBI double to right field.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, Hudson tacked on a two-RBI double, followed by a Katie Goelz two-bagger up the middle to plate another run. The back-to-back three-run innings by the Tommies put the team up 6-0 after two full frames.
The Phoenix would slowly add on runs in the bottom of the third and fourth, two runs in the third, and one in the fourth. The bottom of the fourth included a bases loaded situation with no outs, which pitcher Isabelle True was able to work out of.
Following True's escape act, the Toms put together a four-run fifth helped by RBI hits from Adrianna Young and Ellestad, and a steal of home by Rudy. The Tommies amassed five base hits in the top of the fifth. Adding to the scoring fun, the Purple stole home again in the sixth, and Rudy hit the first home run of her Division I career on a two-run shot to right.
