Momentum ebbs and flows, Baseball takes split in Texas

4/15/2022 10:28:00 PM | Baseball

Stephenville, Texas - Freshman Ben Vujovich led a big comeback as St. Thomas Baseball rallied from four runs down over the final three innings to post an 11-9 game-two win over host Tarleton State and a split of Friday's non-conference doubleheader.

The Texans, in their second season of Division I competition, rallied to force extra innings in game one, then used a solo home run to post a 6-5, walk-off win in 10 innings.

The teams close the three-game series Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest.

The Tommies (6-21) did a lot of things well on the day. They had no errors in the field over 18-plus innings. Their pitchers struck out 24 Tarleton batters. And their batters slugged three homers and four doubles in a 21-hit performance over 19 innings.

In the game-two win, Vujovich became the first Tommie with a six RBI game. His three-run homer capped a five-run rally in the eighth inning.

The Purple secured the win as catcher Max Moris threw out the potential game-tying runner looking to steal second base with two outs and two on in the bottom of the ninth inning.

That let freshman reliever Kevin Millar get his first Division I pitching win (one run allowed in two innings). It also gave Chris Chiriboga his first D-I save (two scoreless innings).

Tanner Marsh hit a solo home run early in game two to tie the game 1-1. But the Toms fell behind 9-5 through six innings. They pulled within three runs in the top of the seventh inning as Avery Lehman singled and Vujovich drove him home with a double.

The Purple put a five-run eighth inning together. A hit by pitch and two infield errors loaded the bases with none out. A sac fly by Tommy Golbranson and a wild pitch let the Toms climb within 9-8. After a walk put runners at first and second, Vujovich followed with a three-run homer for what proved to be the winning margin.

The Tommies couldn't capitalize on Charlie's Bartholomew's 4-for-5 plate performance in game one -- the first four-hit game by a St. Thomas player in year one of Division I play.

Both teams left eight runners on base, and the Toms had 12 hits and no errors.

Kyle Halverson's two-run home run -- his fifth home run in five games -- helped the Toms take a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. That score held up until the last of the ninth inning. Starting pitcher Graham Laubscher allowed four runs in five innings and stood to take the mound victory.

Down to their last out in the ninth inning with the tying run at third, the Texans used a walk and an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.

On his fourth hit in the top of the 10th inning, Bartholomew took second on an error. A pinch runner reached third on a subsequent infield single, but the Purple were unable to take the lead and the game remained tied.

In its half of the 10th, Tarleton ended the game with a walkoff solo home run by Dylan Choy Foo.
