Bullpen sharp, Baseball wins again on the road

Stephenville, Texas - Four St. Thomas relievers allowed just one run and one hit over five innings and Max Moris punched a key two-run single to lead Tommie Baseball to Saturday's 6-3 victory over host Tarleton State. 

The win let the Tommies take the non-conference series, 2-1, and post the team's first back-to-back road wins of 2022.

St. Thomas (7-21) never trailed as it raced to a 6-0 lead in the first four innings. Starter Devon Schewe allowed two runs and four hits over four innings.

Will Nigut earned his first Division I pitching win as he worked a scoreless fifth inning and came out to start the sixth. After two walks, Jeremy Klick came on with two on base and none out. Klick got the first out on an RBI squeeze bunt, then retired the sides. and later pitched a scoreless seventh inning. 

T.J. Constertina allowed a single to start the eighth inning but struck out two and got a fly out to end the frame. Freshman Carl Cano took his first college save as he got a fly out and two strikeouts to close out the road win.

Moris, Kyle Halverson, Brigs Richartz and Charlie Bartholomew each had two hits to lead an 11-hit attack. Bartholomew had an RBI double and drove in a second run with a bases-loaded walk. Halverson scored in the first on a wild pitch and had an RBI single in the second inning. Moris' two run single in the fourth pushed the lead to 6-0. 

The Toms are scheduled to play a single game at Minnesota on Tuesday evening. They return home for Summit League play Friday through Sunday, April 22-24, against Northern Colorado.


Tommie Notes

Freshman Brigs Richartz ran his hitting streak to eight, and he's hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.

Since an April 3 home doubleheader against South Dakota State, Kyle Halverson has hit safely in eight of the last nine games, combining to go 14-for-37 (.378) with nine RBI, nine runs and five HRs.

The Toms have recorded five consecutive error-free games in the field. They have converted 177 consecutive defensive chances over parts of the last six games. Their .980 fielding clip moved them into the Summit League lead and ranks in the top 15 nationally.
