Omaha, Neb. - St. Thomas Baseball was unable to capitalize on a strong pitching outing by freshman lefty Evan Esch as the host Omaha Mavs pulled out a 3-2 walk-off win here Sunday in Summit League play.
The Mavs (9-13 overall, 2-1 Summit) scored once in the seventh inning to knot the score at 2-2. Later in the bottom of the ninth inning, Omaha used a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count with one out to claim the victory and take the series, 2-1. Both teams had just five hits.
Esch allowed one run and one hit over his first six innings. He allowed a one-out single in the seventh inning before the Toms went to a relief pitcher. Moments later a two-out double plated the tying run. Esch allowed two earned runs, two hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
Freshman Brigs Richartz led off the game with a leadoff double -- which extended his hitting streak to six games. He was bunted to third base then scored the game's first run on Charlie Bartholomew's RBI single.
The Toms' other run came in the seventh inning as Max Moris singled, took second on Joe Vos' single, and scored on an Omaha fielding error.
St. Thomas (4-14, 1-2) saw its 2022 record in one-run decisions drop to 1-7. The Toms have batted first and been the visiting team in 15 out of 18 games, and have yet to play a home game on campus.
Weather permitting, the Purple will play at home next Wednesday in a 3 p.m. non-conference clash against Viterbo. St. Thomas is scheduled to play host to South Dakota State in its first home Summit League series next Friday through Sunday, April 1-3, at Koch Diamond.
