Tampa, Fla. - St. Thomas softball (4-20) knocked off No. 22 South Florida (27-7), 10-4, in a Sunday thrashing at the USF Invitational. It marked the first win over a ranked opponent in the Division I history of the program.
Firing on all three phases, the St. Thomas offense outhit South Florida, 14-8. The Bulls were held to just three hits over the final four innings of the game. With the win, the Tommies halted a seven-game losing streak, gaining confidence entering the conference portion of the schedule.
Freshman righty Christina Crawford spinned a gem, allowing just three earned runs in seven innings and capturing her second victory of the season. Over the final four frames, Crawford did not allow a run, and allowed just three base hits.
Down, 2-0, entering the top of the third, junior outfielder Coryn Jacobson put the Tommies on the board with an RBI single scoring Brooke Ellestad. Following a two-run bottom of the third by the Bulls, St. Thomas put together a three-run top of the fourth to go on top. Kaitlyn Raymond singled to right field to score Kenzie Miller, and fellow freshman Ellestad followed with a three-run bomb to put the Purple on top.
A three-run fifth inning by the Tommies saw the team score on an error, a fielder's choice, and a Raymond RBI single. St. Thomas would tack on two more runs on a Megan Baniecke single and a Nicole Pieper base hit to left field.
Four different Tommies recorded a multi-hit game, including the top of the order in Raymond and Ellestad, who each finished with three hits and a combined five RBI. Jacobson and Pieper finished with two base hits and an RBI a piece. Eight of the nine St. Thomas hitters to receive an at bat recorded a base hit.
The Tommies walked (4) more times than they struck out (3), and eight different players tallied a run scored against South Florida. The team's two stolen bases against USF matched a game high for the team this season.
