Softball secures first Summit League victory at Western Illinois

Game one consisted of a few rally attempts and a big inning by the Tommies that ultimately fell just short at the Leathernecks. Freshman Christina Crawford and senior Kendall Hopkins each tossed three innings, with Crawford striking out one in the start, and Hopkins punching out two.
A consistent trend, St. Thomas opened the scoring, as freshman shortstop Brooke Ellestad punched a single to center field to drive in senior Nicole Pieper and give the Tommies a 1-0 lead.
Following a four-run bottom of the third by Western Illinois, Ellestad picked up another run-scoring single, driving in two on a base hit to center. Sarah Hudson and Coryn Jacobson followed up Ellestad with RBI-singles of their own, and a wild pitch and Cassidy Carby sac fly put St. Thomas up, 7-4.
The pitching staff for Tommies struggled for the second-consecutive frame, and once again the Toms found themselves trailing entering the offensive portion of the inning. Down by a run in the top of the fifth, Kaitlyn Raymond reached on an error which allowed Maddie Grad to race home and tie the contest at 8-8.
Breaking out, early and often, St. Thomas rattled off seven runs in the first inning, and eight unanswered runs over the first two frames.
Jacobson kickstarted the offense with a two-run double to left center to score Ellestad and Hudson. Pieper followed with an RBI-single to third base, and an error and bases-loaded walk put the Toms up 5-0. Ellestad gave the Tommies their final two runs of the first inning on a single to left.
In the top of the second, senior Megan Baniecke lined a home run to left field, her second of the season and second at the Division I level. After 3.1 innings from Baniecke, junior Isabelle True entered with the bases loaded, and struck out two to get out of the inning.
Answering a four-run bottom of the third by Western Illinois, St. Thomas scored four runs in the fourth, helped by a single from Baniecke that drive in Jacobson, and a few ground balls that went the way of the Tommies.
St. Thomas would add a final run in the top of the fifth on the fifth career home run for Carby. The home run gave the Tommies an eight-run advantage and allowed the team to win in five innings.
