Crawford spins a complete game in Softball's 5-1 win at Western Illinois

3/27/2022 2:32:00 PM | Softball

Macomb, Ill. - St. Thomas softball (6-21, 2-1 Summit League) closed the series at Western Illinois (5-21, 1-2 Summit League) with a 5-1 victory on Sunday.

Christina Crawford continues to excel on the mound, as the freshman righty earned her third victory of the season, tossing seven innings and allowing just one earned run. Crawford struck out four batters en route to the complete game win. The one run allowed was the lowest amount of earned runs allowed by Crawford in a start that lasted more than four innings.

The two teams traded scoreless frames until the top of the fourth, when Maddie Grad drove in Kenzie Miller on a single to right field that allowed Miller to dodge the tag at the plate and put the Tommies on top, 1-0. Freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Raymond followed with a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed and brought home Grad.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, third baseman Sarah Hudson lined a single up the middle to clear the bases, picking up two RBI in the process. The St. Thomas 9-3 hitters were a combined 7-12 at the pate two four runs and three RBI.

Freshman shortstop Brooke Ellestad and Grad each stole a base in the St. Thomas victory. The win gives the Tommies their first Summit League series win in program history. The team earned its first Summit League win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at the Leathernecks.
