Kansas City, Mo. - St. Thomas softball (6-23, 2-3 Summit League) was handed a pair of road conference losses by Kansas City (8-21, 4-1 Summit League) on Saturday.
In game one, the Tommies trailed 2-0 entering the top of the fourth. With one out, Brooke Ellestad launched a home run to left center, cutting the deficit in half. The long ball was the sixth of the season for the freshman, which leads the team.
St. Thomas would be held off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh, when down 6-1, sophomore backstop Maddie Grad hit the first home run of her career. Grad's home run was of the three run sorts and trimmed the Kansas City lead to two runs.
Freshman Christina Crawford pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four, and letting up six earned runs. Sophomore righty Grace Bennett did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of relief work, striking out one Roo. Senior second baseman Nicole Pieper tallied a pair of base hits, the second two-hit game of the season for Pieper.
The Tommies jumped out to an early lead on Kansas City in the second game, as a caught stealing play allowed Cassidy Carby to race home for the first run, and a sacrifice fly from Ellestad scored Grad, putting the team up 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, senior Megan Baniecke led off the frame with a single down the left field line. With one out, Coryn Jacobson singled to right field, placing runners on first and second. Grace Bennett followed with a single of her own to load the bases with one out, leading to another run after an infield error off the bat of Pieper, setting the Toms up with a 3-0 advantage.
The Roos would slowly work their way back, and ultimately force extra innings, where the team would win on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
