Kansas City, Mo. - St. Thomas softball (7-23, 3-3 Summit League) rallied for a 3-2 road win at Kansas City (8-22, 4-2 Summit League) on Sunday.
The Tommies jumped out to an early lead in the game with a leadoff second inning home run by sophomore first baseman Katie Goelz. The home run was the first of Goelz's Division I career and gave her the first Division I RBI of her career.
Facing a couple of runners on in the bottom of the second, freshman pitcher Christina Crawford got the Roo hitter to line out softly to shortstop and end the frame.
Following a three up, three down inning by the Tommie offense, Kansas City put together a two-run bottom of the third to go up, 2-1. From the fourth through the sixth inning, both pitching staffs would dominate, holding the other team scoreless.
After a stymied offensive showing, St. Thomas put together a two-out rally, as Sara Benner singled to shortstop and Mackenzie Rudy followed with a double to left field to place runners on second and third. Senior infielder Nicole Pieper lined a double to left to drive in both runs and put St. Thomas ahead, 3-2, securing the comeback victory.
Crawford earned her fourth win of the season on Sunday, striking out five, and allowing just two earned runs. Two of Crawford's wins this season have come against conference opponents on the road.
