2/6/2022 4:42:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. - A second-straight third period comeback attempt for St. Thomas women's hockey (5-21-1, 3-19-1 WCHA) was halted by St. Cloud State (9-16-2, 4-15-2 WCHA) in a 3-2 loss on Sunday.
For the second-straight game, both defenses stepped up to hold the other team scoreless over the initial 20 minutes. St. Thomas was outshot by St. Cloud State, 10-5, in the first period. The lone power-play faced by the Tommies in the opening period was held scoreless, as the Purple halted four shot attempts on the Husky advantage. St. Thomas won 11 of 19 faceoff attempts, as senior Anna Erickson went 4-0 in her faceoff matchups.
The St. Cloud State offense woke up midway through the second period, scoring two goals within an 18-second span. Down, 2-0, the Tommies responded with a Maija Almich score (on assists from Megan Cornell and Maddie Jurgensen) to cut the deficit in half. The goal was the second of the season for the junior forward Almich. St. Thomas continued to dominate on faceoffs, going 14-3 in such situations.
Entering the third period trailing by one, 2-1, the Huskies tacked on another goal with 2:07 remaining to extend their lead back to two. The Tommies would rally to cut the lead to one point again, after Allie Monrean found the net on assists from Luci Bianchi and Anna Solheim, with 16 seconds remaining. The team would push the pace over the final few seconds but were unable to knock in the tying score.
St. Thomas finished with an equal number of shots as St. Cloud State, 25-25, after outshooting the opponent 20-15 across the final 40 minutes.
