Defensive effort falls short for Women's Hockey in WCHA Playoffs Opener
2/25/2022 9:10:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minneapolis, Minn. - St. Thomas women's hockey (5-26-1, 3-23-1 WCHA) fell in the team's WCHA Playoffs opener against No. 1 Minnesota (17-7-1, 21-6-1), 4-0, on Friday.
After a first period that saw the Tommies get outshot by the Gophers, 25-3, the team only found themselves trailing by one goal after the initial 20 minutes. Senior goaltender Alexa Dobchuk received that start and tallied 24 saves in the first period. Neither team was assessed with a penalty in the first period either.
Of the nine penalties in the game, five came in the second period. The second period contained the highest number of goals scored, as Minnesota recorded a successful score twice during the 20-minute span. St. Thomas was stymied and unable to record a shot on goal in the period, while the Gophers totaled 18.
The Minnesota shots on goal number would drop to 10 in the third period, while the Tommies posted their highest output for any period, with six. Freshman defender, making her return to the team following the Winter Olympics, notched one shot on goal in the period. She also finished with one block.
St. Thomas was led by junior Emma Larson and freshmen Abby Promersberger and Alli Pahl in defensive blocks (3). Dobchuk, playing all 60 minutes against the top-ranked program in the country, finished with 49 saves. The senior net protector has finished with 39 or more saves in five-straight matches.
