2/24/2022 11:45:00 AM | Women's Hockey

St. Paul, Minn. - In the program's first WCHA Playoffs apearance, St. Thomas women's hockey (5-25-1, 3-23-1 WCHA) travels to duel No. 1 Minnesota (26-7-1, 21-6-1 WCHA) in a road postseason series. Game one will be played on Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday's game is set for a 4:00 p.m. puck drop, and Sunday's game (if necessary) will start at 2:00 p.m. The series will be played in Minneapolis, Minn.

Breaking Down the Roster
St. Thomas has 12 newcomers on its roster. Three of the 12 newcomers are transfers and nine are incoming freshmen. The Tommies return 11 student-athletes from the previous season.

Promersberger Breaks the Ice
Abby Promersberger scored the inaugural goal in team NCAA DI-era history in a 4-1 loss at Ohio State on Sept. 25. Anna Solheim and Megan Cornell added the first two assists in St. Thomas Division I history on Promersberger's goal.

Olympic Tommies
St. Thomas' head coach Joel Johnson, and freshmen Saskia Maurer and Nicole Vallario represented the school in the Winter Olympics. Johnson was at the helm of the U.S. women's hockey program. Maurer and Vallario both competed for the Swiss national team.

Playoff Debut
St. Thomas debuts in the WCHA Playoffs for the first time in program history. The Tommies will travel a few miles to face the Gophers in their first appearance in the league's postseason tournament. Sunday's game will be if needed, per the team's splitting the first two games.

The Offensive Youth
Three freshman make up the top-five goal scorers for the Tommies. Promersberger is the leading scorer of the newcomers with five goals. Promersberger also leads the squad with 13 points this season. Vallario (4) and Lauren Stenslie (3) round out the top five for St. Thomas.

Parent Stepping Up
Sophomore Brieja Parent, a mid-season transfer from UMD, has scored three goals and amassed two assists in 13 games for the Toms. Parent finished with a two-goal game at Bemidji State on Jan. 28. She has also added seven blocks defensively for the Purple.

Last Time Out
The Tommies faced Minnesota in a home-and home series. This weekend will mark, at a minimum, the fourth-straight game against the Gophers. The Toms suffered 7-1 defeats in both games in the series. Maddy Clough scored in the first game of the series, while Luci Bianchi added a goal in game two.

Against the Gophers
St. Thomas is 0-4 against Minnesota in 2021-22. The team lost 8-0 and 8-2 in the first two games against the Gophers earlier this season. The Tommies are 0-2-0 on the road at Minnesota in 2021-22.

About the Gophers
The Gophers reign in the No. 1 spot in the USCHO Top 25 Poll for another week. At home this season, Minnesota is 12-4-0.

WCHA Teams in the Top 25
Four WCHA programs currently sit within the top five of the USCHO Top 25 Poll. Minnesota (#1), Ohio State (#2), Wisconsin (#4), and Minnesota Duluth (#5) represent the league in the poll.
