St. Paul, Minn. – Tommie senior DB Luke Glenna has been selected for another FCS All-America team, this time the 2022 Stats Perform AA third-team.

Last week, Glenna was among 78 players named to the 2022 Associated Press FCS All-America team.

A second-team AP honoree this fall, Glenna and center Matt Weimann are the first Tommies to receive All-America recognition in any sport thus far in the Division I era. Both made fourth-team Phil Steele All-America. They are the 27th and 28th different Tommie players to get All-America distinction at least one time in the 14-season Caruso era.

The Edina, Minn., native appeared in all 11 games for St. Thomas and helped lead a defense that was ranked in the top 10 nationally in FCS in seven categories. Glenna totaled 68 tackles and six pass breakups, and had four interceptions returned for a total of 53 yards.

Glenna was named to the 2022 All-Pioneer Football League first-team this fall after being a second-team honoree in 2021. He was selected as a National Co-Defensive Player of the Week in October after a 22-tackle game against defending league champion Davidson, a key 27-16 victory for the Tommies at home.

On his career, Glenna recorded 15 takeaways (13 interceptions); scored three return touchdowns; contributed to 167 tackles; had two forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles.

He contributed to both the Toms' 2019 MIAC co-champion squad and the 2022 Pioneer champion team.

Phil Steele Magazine honors Weimann

St. Thomas Football has 18 players named to the Phil Steele Magazine All-Pioneer League team, led by senior center Matt Weimann, who was named the publication's choice as Pioneer League Offensive Player of the Year.

Weimann started all 11 games for the Tommies. He blocked for seven 100-yard rushing performances this season, and was a repeat first-team honoree on the All-Pioneer Football League team. St. Thomas is 11-0 in games in the D-I era when it rushes for 200-plus yards as a team, and 12-0 in games when a player has rushed for 99 or more yards. Weimann's play and leadership led a younger offensive line that helped generate an offensive average of 378 yards per game this fall.

Joining Weimann on the Phil Steele All-Pioneer first team were four other Toms including senior DB Luke Glenna; sophomore WR Andrew McElroy; sophomore OL Alec Rasmussen; and sophomore LB Jonathan Bunce.

Second-team honorees were sophomore RB Shawn Shipman; senior FB Joshua Komis; sophomore OL Shea Albrecht; and McElroy as a return specialist.

Third-team honorees were senior QB Cade Sexauer; senior TE Max Zimmerman; sophomore LB Luke Herzog; and sophomore DB Yusef Leak.

Fourth-team honorees were sophomore RB Hope Adebayo; freshman OL Jason Laliberte; graduate DL Mark O'Reilly; senior DL Brent Robley; graduate LB Trent Meyer; freshman KR Owen Kanzler; and Komis as an all-purpose selection.

Glenn Caruso eighth in Eddie Robinson voting

After a ninth-place finish in the 2021 voting, St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso closed eighth among 16 national finalists in the 2022 voting for the Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year.

Caruso was previously named 2022 Pioneer Football League Coach of the Year after his team won its final 10 games and claimed the Pioneer championship at 8-0.

His 143-25 record here over 14 seasons includes a 100-14 mark against conference opponents. His overall .850 winning clip ranks him in the top five for all active NCAA football coaches.

Of the two dozen programs to join FCS since 2004, the Purple are the first team to win a conference championship in season one or two. Two other programs -- Kennesaw State in 2017 and North Dakota State in 2006 -- won conference championships in their third seasons.
