Men's Golf storms to first D-I tourney win for St. Thomas
10/4/2022 5:26:00 PM | Men's Golf
Elkhorn, Neb. - Senior Matthew Raab's score of 69 was the day's low round and Tommie Men's Golf added another milestone of the university's Division I era Tuesday as it won the 14-team Big O tournament hosted by the Omaha Mavericks.
Coach Matt Rachey's Tommie topped five Summit League opponents in the 54-hole tourney that ended Tuesday.
It was St. Thomas' first Division I tournament victory in any sport after three second-place team finishes in 2021-22.
The Purple started the final day tied for the lead with Southern Illinois Edwardsville, just two shots ahead of third place Omaha, the host school. St. Thomas carded a one-over-par 289 as a team on Tuesday but posted a five-shot victory over SIU and Omaha. Its one-under-par 863 total -- the lone sub-par team in the tourney -- was only two shots off the Toms' low 54-hole score of last school year.
Raab tied his career-best round with his three-under-par 69, aided by seven birdies to offset four bogeys. His 54-hole score of 214 -- aided by 13 birdies -- was a career best by one shot. He placed fifth overall in the field of 93 golfers.
Junior Matthew Armstrong carried the Toms over 36 holes on Monday with scores of 70 and 69. He closed with a 78 on Tuesday and tied for 10th place at 217.
Freshman Owen Rexing started with a 77 in his opening round but rebounded with a 70 in his second 18 and a 71 on Tuesday. After sitting in a tie for 69th place after 18 holes he closed in a tie for 13th place.
Junior Glavine Schugel shot 73 and tied for 22nd place. Senior Matthew Garside closed with a 76 and finished in the top half of the field.
Redshirt junior Will Frazier played as an individual and closed Tuesday with a 73 and a 226 total.
