Women's Hockey battles at Minnesota State, falls 3-1

12/3/2021 5:34:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Mankato, Minn. – A Jenna Hartung goal was not enough for women's hockey (4-10-1, 2-10-1 WCHA) in a close 3-1 road loss at Minnesota State (6-9-0, 2-9-0 WCHA) on Friday. The score was 2-1 for all but 37 seconds of the third period.

The two squads traded shots before a Minnesota State even strength goal put the opposition up, 1-0, seven minutes into the contest. Junior Allie Monrean and graduate Megan Cornell each got up a shot within a 12-second span around the 17-minute mark, but both ended up blocked by Mavs skaters. The Tommies were edged on shots, 16-14, by the Mavericks in the first period of play, as Monrean (3), Abby Promersberger (2), and Anna Solheim (2) all finished with multiple shots in the first for St. Thomas.

After an MSU goal six minutes into the second period, the Tommies responded with an even strength netter from junior forward Hartung (on an assist from freshman defenseman Alli Pahl) with 8:34 left in the second to cut the Maverick lead to 2-1. It was the first goal of Hartung's career at the NCAA Division I level and the first-career assist for Pahl. Both teams would be held scoreless for the remaining eight-plus minutes of the second period.

A late empty net goal sealed the win for Minnesota State. The Tommies got up 45 shots, 24 of which were on goal, while neither team was able to score on a power-play situation. Freshman goaltender Saskia Maurer made 28 saves while posting a .933 save percentage in the net for St. Thomas.
