Game Notes - Women's Hockey set for home-and-home series with Minnesota State

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas women's hockey (4-9-1, 2-9-1 WCHA) prepares to match up with Minnesota State (5-9-0, 1-9-0 WCHA) in a home-and-home series beginning on Friday, Dec. 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Mankato, Minn. and culminating in St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2:00 p.m. for the second game of the two-game slate.

Inaugural Campaign
St. Thomas enters its first season of competition at the NCAA Division I level. The team previously played at the division iii level before making the jump to Division I. The Tommies are being led by a new coaching staff, with head coach Joel Johnson being hired in early June. Johnson brings more than 20 years of coach experience to St. Thomas. Johnson has coached at the collegiate level as well as with USA Women's Hockey.

Breaking Down the Roster
St. Thomas has 12 newcomers on its roster and three of the 12 newcomers are transfers and nine are incoming freshmen. The Tommies return 11 student-athletes from the previous season.

Tommies Schedule Talk
The Tommies play a 32-game schedule in 2021-22. 28 of the 32 contests will come against WCHA opponents, as St. Thomas will also play non-conference games at RIT and at Lindenwood.

Promersberger Breaks the Ice
Abby Promersberger scored the inaugural goal in team NCAA DI-era history in a 4-1 loss at Ohio State on Sept. 25. Anna Solheim and Megan Cornell added the first two assists in St. Thomas Division I history on Promersberger's goal.

St. Thomas Women's Hockey has a home-and-home series this weekend for their first time facing off against Minnesota State-Mankato.

WCHA Teams in the USCHO Poll
Wisconsin (#1), Ohio State (#2), Minnesota (#5), and Minnesota Duluth (9) all currently sit within the top 10 of the most recent USCHO poll.

Matching Up with the Mavs
This weekend marks the first meeting between the two opponents. Last time out, the Mavericks faced No. 2 Ohio State and lost by scores of 6-3 and 9-0. Freshman goaltender Avery Stilwell stopped a total of 84 of 99 shots faced on the weekend, and it was Stilwell's first time suiting up for Minnesota State. The Mavs have dropped eight-straight contests. Senior Brittyn Fleming leads the team with four goals and 14 assists and junior Kelsey King is second with eight goals and five assists.

Shooters Shoot
When finishing with 30 or more shots as a team, the Tommies are 2-1-0. The team's season-high shot output of 38 came in a 3-1 win at RIT on Oct. 29.

Last Time Out
The Tommies enter the series coming off of two tough losses against No. 1 Wisconsin at home. St. Thomas lost game one, 7-1, and game two, 5-1. Freshman Maddie Jurgensen scored her first collegiate goal for the Tommies against the Badgers. Alexa Dobchuk stopped 33 of 40 shots on goal, while Saskia Maurer stopped 60 of 65 shots faced. Maurer's 60 saves were the sixth-most by a WCHA goalie and the second-most in a contest this season in NCAA Division I. Freshman Abby Promersberger scored her team-high fourth goal of the season against Wisconsin.

Up Next
Following the two-game series with Minnesota State, the Tommies will travel to St. Charles, Mo. for a weekend series at Lindenwood on Friday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 11.
