Women's Hockey scores thrice in third period comeback attempt at Lindenwood
12/10/2021 10:46:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Maryland Heights, Mo. - St. Thomas women's hockey (4-12-1, 2-11-1 WCHA) rallied from down three scores to push Lindenwood (4-13-0, 3-3 CHA) to overtime in a 4-3 loss on Friday.
After the initial 20 minutes of play, the Tommies found themselves trailing, 2-0. The first period was primarily spent on the Tommies' defensive end, as St. Thomas faced 31 shots and 17 shots on goal. Both opposing team's goals came at even strength. The Toms amassed six blocks as a unit in the opening period, led by freshman defenseman Maddy Clough (2). On the offensive end, all 11 of St. Thomas' shot attempts were on goal.
A power-play opportunity early in the second period was unsuccessful as shots from Clough and sophomore forward Luci Bianchi were unable to clear the net. On the defensive end of the ice, the Tommies halted a Lindenwood power-play as the Lions accrued five shot attempts with an advantage. A goal at the mid-point of the period extended the Lindenwood lead to 3-0. The Tommies upped their shot total to 23 in the second period.
Senior forward Anna Erickson put the Tommies on the board with a netter around the eight-minute mark in the third. It was the first goal of the season for Erickson as freshman forward Lauren Stenslie and freshman defenseman Nicole Vallario found her for the score. A few moments later, junior forward Allie Monrean netted her third goal of the campaign off an assist from Vallario. The first two St. Thomas goals came on power-play situations. Under two minutes after the second goal, Vallario netted a shot with a dish from Stenslie. It was the third goal of the season for Vallario and the fourth assist this year for Stenslie.
The Lions would pick up a 4-3 win in overtime. Freshman goaltender Saskia Maurer made 43 saves while limiting both of Lindenwood's power-play chances.
QUICK NOTES
