Late goal not enough for Women's Hockey in 4-1 loss

12/11/2021 4:45:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Maryland Heights, Mo. - St. Thomas women's hockey (4-13-1, 2-11-1 WCHA) fell, 4-1, at Lindenwood (4-13, 3-3 CHA) in the Tommies' final non-conference matchup of the season.

A goal at even strength by the Lions gave the opposition a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Lindenwood would tack on another score to go up 2-0, at the 2:10 mark of the first. The Tommies got up 16 shots in the first period, eight of which were on goal, finishing with just one less SOG than the Lions. The second of Lindenwood's scores came on a power-play opportunity.

While being held scoreless in the second period, St. Thomas upped its offensive threat with 29 shots, all of which were on goal. The Toms accumulated three power-play attempts but were unable to score on them. The one power-play that the Tommies faced in the second period was limited.

An early third period goal extended the Lindenwood advantage to 3-0. Freshman defenseman Nicole Vallario, continuing her strong weekend of play, found the net six minutes into the third period for her fourth score of the season. Senior forward Anna Erickson and freshman defenseman Alli Pahl assisted on the score. Vallario tied the team-lead in goals this season with number four. The Lions would add another goal on an empty-net opportunity with two minutes left in the contest.

The Tommies outshot the Lions, 63-62, and finished with two more shots on goal, 33-31. Freshman goaltender Saskia Maurer, making her second-straight start of the weekend, made 27 saves and limited one power-play.

QUICK NOTES
  • Vallario finished the two-game series at Lindenwood with two goals and two assists. Her four-point outburst is the most in a two-game stretch for the Tommies this season
  • Vallario is now tied with freshman forward Abby Promersberger for the team-lead in goals scored (4)
  • Sunday's match was just the third time this season the Tommies have outshot an opponent
