Four-year Tommie Women's Hockey assistant Marty Sertich was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies this week. He was one of five individual inductees and one team honored in a class that included his head coach, Scott Owens.
Sertich joined the Colorado College hockey team as a top prospect from Roseville, Minn., in 2002. He was recognized as Minnesota's Mr. Hockey in 2001.
Recruited by fellow Hall of Fame inductee, head coach Scott Owens, Sertich was one of the most skilled and reliable players on the ice – dressing for every collegiate game while at CC. He led the nation in scoring in 2005 with 64 points, (27 goals, 37 assists) averaging about 1.5 points per game. That same season, he was named first-team All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association, first-team All-American for the American Hockey Coaches Association (West), and USA Hockey's College Player of the Year. As a junior in 2005, Sertich won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the National Player of the Year.
He was honored as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 2006 and named second-team All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association. He ranks 12th on the school's career scoring list with 182 points (61g, 121a).
Following his collegiate career, he signed with the Dallas Stars as a free agent and was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. He then played professional hockey in the AHL for the Iowa Stars and Lake Erie Monsters.
Sertich continues to give back to the game of hockey with Tradition Hockey - a program focused on developing youth hockey players on and off the ice. Sertich currently serves as an assistant coach for University of St. Thomas' women's hockey team.
